I spend hours talking her through basic arithmetic. It is SO frustrating. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26682771 Get her a better teacher/tutor - the way you teach is clearly not making it clear to her, so find someone who can. Everyone can be good at math - you just need to find the right teacher |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 31189143 Canada 02/20/2013 09:27 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | most girls do suck at math because we are usually right brain dominant which = visual and math concepts (numbers) are difficult to visualize. if she's like most girls she probably counts with her fingers instead of in her head ( like guys can). so if you keep that in mind...that's she's visually cued and incorporate some artistic ways into the math formulas she may grasp it from a different angle. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29310915 Use Saxon math. Get Mary Pride's book on homeschooling. I count on my fingers, bad with math, but yet I visualize inventions and things in my head, like a 3d image of something that I want to figure out, Nikola Tesla described having a very strong ability to make an entire invention with moving parts and dimensions in his head, THEN go and do it on paper, then actually make it. "I have felt despair many times in my life, but I do not keep a chair for it." ~Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes Today is a gift, that is why it is called "The Present" “When an opponent declares, “I will not come over to your side,” I calmly say, “Your child belongs to us already… What are you? You will pass on. Your descendants, however, now stand in the new camp. In a short time they will know nothing else but this new community.” - Adolf Hitler “If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.” -Oscar Wilde Have a nice day, may God bless you :D |

Try a variety of visual and tactile aids instead of just pencil and paper.... If she's a different type of 'thinker' you want to make sure to support that behavior and not try to crush it by insisting that everything needs done in a certain way all of the time. |

I spend hours talking her through basic arithmetic. It is SO frustrating. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26682771 There's your answer...YOU! This is admittedly true. I was a highly paid corporate lawyer who never saw his kids. I left the homework to my wife. As I saw my kids doing worse and worse in school and life, I knew that they needed me. I quit my job last month. I've been working on math with my daughter since then. She's gotten better but I'm amazed at how far behind she is. WTF was my wife doing for the past three years? |

If her overall knowledge and reading ability is average or above but her math is way low, she might be eligible for special services such as tutoring or accommodations such as calculators. Talk to her teacher. |

Lots of good advice here. Not just in this post but in the whole thread. I am trying to get creative with helping her learn this stuff. My wife has a Ph.D. and still does arithmetic on her fingers. Perhaps u should lower my expectations. I'm not a drill Sargent at her on this. But I just needed to vent. |

Mr. Predictor Senior Forum Moderator User ID: 1032780 United States 02/20/2013 09:51 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | math learning is incredibly dependent on the kids developmental level and they catch up quick just make doing math homework enjoyable with your daughter, find something she is good at and let her become good at it to give her confidence "If there is a new fascism, it won't come from skinheads and punks; it will come from people who eat granola and think they know how the world should be." - Brian Eno |
