ClydeX User ID: 11310285 United States 02/22/2013 11:28 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The storm that just passed through here (central Colorado) was all over the place in the forecast. Initially with small chance of snow, then heavy snow, then 20% chance of precipitation, and we ended up with ~5" - 6" here at 6,500' elevation, with larger amounts at higher elevation. The forecast for the coming week is not even that promising. We are in a severe moisture deficit, and as an arid, high-desert environment; we get most of our water from winter snowfall. We have not seen the winter weather over the last couple of years that is considered as typical for this area. We need FEET of snow, not an inch or two here and there. This summer will get ugly. Job 12:7) But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: 8) Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 33389306 United States 02/22/2013 11:29 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Largest winter storm of the season helping dent Midwest drought Quoting: Luisport Posted by: Dr. Jeff Masters, 03:00 PM GMT em 21 de Fevereiro de 2013 The largest snowstorm of the winter for the Midwest drought region is winding up, and promises to bring more than a foot of snow to portions of Kansas and Nebraska. Rain and snow from the storm--dubbed Winter Storm "Q"--will put a noticeable dent in the Great Drought of 2012 - 2013 over the Midwest. A second storm due to move through the region on Monday will provide a bit of additional help. The twin storms promise to drop more than an inch of rain (or liquid equivalent rain, for regions like Kansas and Nebraska getting heavy snow.) Many areas of the drought region should enjoy their their wettest day in months on Thursday. The core drought region in the Midwest needs 3 - 9 inches of precipitation to end the drought, so the 1" of precipitation expected from the two storms will merely dent the drought, not end it. Still, the economic value of the rain and snow from the two storms is in the billions of dollars. In addition, runoff from the storms will insure that barge traffic on the Mississippi River will be able to operate well into summer. The Mississippi River at St. Louis is currently about 7' above the lowest water level on record, up over six feet from the near record-low levels of early January. [link to www.wunderground.com] This sounds like very good news for them. And for me in the NYC area, since it's late Feb. already, we're going to get rain rather than snow. If we're lucky this will significantly reduce the icy snowpack we've had on the ground now for several weeks since Nemo went through. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 25635188 United States 02/22/2013 02:07 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | we broke a Century old record for snow fall yesterday - in Colorado Springs (seven inches)... and its headed East = at first it was falling vertically and very benign, but that didn't last long because the wind picked up the snow and drifted it across the highways ... well, not in the city but I got a four foot drift in MY driveway HA HA more expected tonight ... great thing is, that this moisture will bring us out of the drought, and we may even have a green Spring ! |
