Yeah. Then you realize the ocean is really, really big and has waves that will toss your boat like a ping-pong ball, so you spend a lot of money fixing it so it will get where you want to go. Then you realize you spent enough for business class tickets and 3 months of an apartment when you got there just trying to get the blisters out of your hull.

Any other questions?

Study weather patterns. Know the best date range to depart. Then study the weather reports for that period when your getting ready to set sail. and do it.

Godspeed.

Weather patterns aren't going to save you from rouge waves or any of the other 1,000 ways to die at sea.

Almost did in my 20's. A friend of mine is almost done readying his boat and I like hearing about his progress but, nah, not for me anymore. I guess my opinion has changed because I'm in love with my space heater and couldn't bear to leave it behind.

I've thought about it, but with my shitty luck, a damn asteroid would seek me out and come crashing down on my shitty cheap sailboat with me in it of course, and end my wonderful adventure.

Enjoy frequent boardings from authorities of various nationalities for searches and extortion on a good day, and encountering pirates on a bad. You cant bring a gun.

Yes, and it's a losing idea.

Forget boats unless your at the end of your road and life.

Btw, I know these boat threads are just bait for me, fuck you PTB.

Re: anyone thought about buying a shitty cheap sailboat and sailing away forever ?
Buying an old boat and restoring it is expensive but, if you shop wisely and find the one that needs more tlc and less repair you will be alright. My boat is 40 years old and has needed some repair as well as tlc but, the fiberglass is an inch thick in places and was overbuilt from the get. Use good judgement and you will be rewarded. Use poor judgement and you will sail away forever. good luck, david

No but I have daydreamed of having my own pirate galleon or at least a three masted schooner and sailing away forever

Sounds great, but I will always be a landlubber, rather head to the mountains.

Yp. Would like to load some seeds, tools and ammo on board and sail to a desolate uninhabited island and never see a human being again.

Re: anyone thought about buying a shitty cheap sailboat and sailing away forever ?
I did just this 5 years ago. Choose the right boat and the work is minimal.

So far my wife and kids and I have sailed from Florida to Trinidad and back. Spent months in the Bahamas. Having the time of our lives and saving money cause we live for free. No bills. No mortgage. No land tax. No nothing. We live free for real. Our boat is outfitted for 2 years. Off grid sufficient.

I can't imagine a better lifestyle. My 2nd grader is in 5th grade from homeschooling.

Plus..when TSHTF we know exactly where to go.

if you don't know a lot about yachts and sailing, you probably shouldn't do it.

if you're already allergic to epoxy resin, you definitely shouldn't do it.
