I heard a plane from mitili to athens couldnt reach the airport (it shook them a lot) and they went to land in Crete! Quoting: Ostria1 Seems bad, neighborhoods that don't usually get flooded were affected too as it seems, can't imagine how bad it is in the north-west suburbs where the infrastructure is traditionally bad. |

Hehe, if we had more than this, people would probably die in the flood or something, there is no adequate infrastructure to cope with more than this, especially in Athens. |

Wow, our infrastructure is not good too... It's very fun when we have a 110 millimetres rainfall here, usually in March or April, and some cars start to float around! But you know... Brazilians know how to enjoy and get the best from all situations, so this is how we deal with floods: [link to 1.bp.blogspot.com] [link to avi.alkalay.net] Why get stressed?? |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 34939921 Portugal 02/22/2013 08:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Flash Flood in Greece on Friday, 22 February, 2013 at 10:04 (10:04 AM) UTC. Description Torrential rain caused widespread flooding in many parts of Attica on Friday with the fire service receiving more than 400 calls to pump out flooded basements or rescue stranded vehicles. The rainfall, which started in the early hours of the morning, flooded several roads with the areas of Aegaleo, Nikaia, Haidari and Peristeri in the western suburbs among the worst hit. The rivers of Ilissos and Pivrodafni both broke their banks with witnesses reporting seeing parked cars being swept away in the Pikrodafni River. Several roads were closed off including Pireos Street due to heavy flooding at the Hamosternas junction, NATO Avenue near Aspropyrgos, Dimokratias Street and coastal Poseidonos Avenue near the junction with Syggrou Avenue. The Athens-Corinth national highway was flooded at the Skaramanga junction and parts of Piraeus, Drapetsona and Kalamaki were also badly affected with several reports of people trapped in their cars. The flooding caused problems with the operation of the Athens tram and led to many buses being taken off the roads. There were some disruptions with ferry travel. Flooding at electricity substations in Terpsithea and Korydallos caused power cuts early in the morning but power had been widely restored shortly after 10 a.m. [link to hisz.rsoe.hu] |

The fire department said it had received at least 600 calls to drain water from houses and businesses. Many of the city's streets remain ankle-deep in water. "It was one of the worst thunderstorms we have ever had in the greater Athens area [since 1961]," fire department chief Sotiris Georgakopoulos told NET state television. At one point the rainfall was so intense that parked cars were swept away by racing waters. "There are cars immobilised on several Athens highways and we have dispatched tow trucks to clear the roads," senior traffic police officer Dimitris Papanagiotou told NET. Doctors believe it was a shock and heart attack, but the exact cause will be verified later. |
