Lebanon seems to be moving closer to becoming a major new front in Syria’s 2-year-old civil war after a series of deadly clashes in Syrian between rebel forces and Hezbollah, which backs the embattled Damascus regime.

The Free Syrian Army, one of the leading groups within the overwhelmingly Sunni Muslimopposition, threatened Tuesday to strike at the Shiite Hezbollah in Lebanon after the Iranian-backed movement sought to extend its control of Syrian territory along the border.

The Hezbollah offensive, which began last week, appears intended to protect vital supply routes to Syrian forces loyal to the regime from Hezbollah’s heartland in the Bekaa Valley in northeastern Lebanon.

Hezbollah also needs to maintain its own supply route from Syria along which it has been reportedly receiving advanced weapons, such as surface-to-surface missiles capable of hitting anywhere in Israel, and Russian SA-17 anti-aircraft weapons, from President Bashar Assad’s regime and Iran.

Israel views this flow of weapons with considerable alarm because, among other things, they will allow Hezbollah for the first time to challenge its air supremacy.

This is the most likely issue to draw the Israelis into Syria’s war and a Jan. 30 airstrike, supposedly against a Hezbollah arms convoy, indicated how jumpy the Israelis are getting about Iran’s support for Assad, its key Arab ally.

Syrian Rebels Bomb Hezbollah Compounds Inside Lebanon And Syria…

Syrian rebels have reportedly bombed two compounds operated by the Lebanese terror organization Hezbollah, the main Syrian opposition group announced Thursday.

The Free Syrian Army (FSA) claims its forces bombed Hezbollah facilities in Lebanon and Syria, a cross-border raid that indicates the rebels’ desire to increase their attacks on allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

“The development may mark a critical turn in Syria’s two-year war, bearing out fears that the increasingly sectarian conflict would spill over across Syria’s borders,” according to the Israel Project (TIP), which first reported on the operation.

Lebanon Civil War 1975-1991 and nothing changed, we are actually about to become more sectarian than ever (Orthodox Law, this Syrian affair will also take a long time.

It was always inevitable that Syria’s revolution would have repercussions in neighboring Lebanon, but since the start of the uprising two years ago, never have we come closer to all-out, direct conflict between Syrian and Lebanese forces.

The rebel Free Syrian Army has issued an ultimatum to Hezbollah, giving it 48 hours to cease its operations in Syria, or face attacks in its stronghold of southern Lebanon. In response, Hezbollah - a staunch ally of the Syrian regime - has reportedly begun sending reinforcements to the border.

This alarming escalation comes just days after clashes resulted in the killing of three Hezbollah fighters and the wounding of 14 others, as well as five FSA fatalities. The fighting reportedly broke out after Hezbollah forces, who have been in control of eight Syrian border villages since last year, tried to move into three adjacent villages that are in FSA hands.

This is a “serious threat to Syrian-Lebanese relations and regional peace and security,” said the Syrian National Coalition, adding that it holds the Lebanese government responsible for ending the “aggression.”

Recent developments in Syria indicate that Iran has increased its support for the regime of President Bashar al-Assad on more than one level. As Iran seems to have taken over military and logistical decisions, Hezbollah’s involvement has also expanded and intensified. This is very bad news for Lebanon, and unless the Lebanese government and the Shia community take drastic measures to dissociate themselves from Hezbollah, Lebanon will not be spared from an imminent, region-wide sectarian war.

The Free Syrian Army announced that it had hit a Hezbollah position in Lebanon and warned of further escalation, although a rebel battalion denied the claims to NOW as did Lebanese security sources.

Free Syrian Army spokesperson Louay Almokdad said in a statement that the rebel army launched two separate attacks against the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

“An FSA brigade launched two consecutive attacks at 12:30 pm on Thursday, the first of which targeted a group of Hezbollah fighters in the Syrian southern Qusayr district, killing and wounding all of its members,” Almokdad said in his statement.

“In the second attack, a group of FSA brigades targeted a Hezbollah arsenal outpost inside Lebanese territory in Hosh al-Sayyed Ali with rockets and achieved direct hits.”
