Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said Friday that radioactive waste is leaking from six storage tanks at Hanford.

Thanks for letting folks know about this. This has been a cleanup operation for 25 years and BILLIONS of dollars have been spent to "clean" this up.

25 years. Think about it. They either DON'T WANT to clean it up or they CAN'T clean it up.

Which is it?

To top it all off, WA they installed a brand new reactor in 1983 and in 2010 had their license renewed.

IMO, they really just don't give a fuck. Noone seems to care, particularly the residents in the area. All they care about is a paycheck.

YAKIMA, Wash. — Washington Gov. Jay Inslee says six underground radioactive waste tanks at the nation’s most contaminated nuclear site are leaking.

Inslee made the announcement Friday afternoon after meeting with federal officials in Washington, D.C. Last week it was revealed that one of the 177 tanks at south-central Washington’s Hanford Nuclear Reservation was leaking liquids. Inslee called the latest news “disturbing.”


The tanks already are long past their intended 20-year life span. They hold millions of gallons of a highly radioactive stew left from decades of plutonium production for nuclear weapons.

The U.S. Department of Energy said earlier that liquid levels were decreasing in one of the tanks at the site. Monitoring wells near the tank have not detected higher radiation levels.

Adding to my last post... there are good guys really trying to get the FEDs to do their job. They've had an uphill battle and I really do empathize with them.

This mess sits right on the Columbia River and is threatening to leak into the Columbia River which is a very important river for Salmon spawning in the Pacific Northwest.

Estimated cost to finish Hanford cleanup now at $114.8B

Hanford cleanup would continue until at least 2060 and possibly 2070, the latest report said. Projected costs also cover post-cleanup management until 2090. Previous lifecycle reports have shown cleanup continuing through at least 2060 and possibly 2065.

The whole area is completely F'd. My grandfather was a nuclear physicist at the plant in the 40's. He is dead of lymphatic cancer. My mother is currently battling stage four breast cancer and was a child living in the area and swimming downstream from Hanford when operations like this [link to en.wikipedia.org]

After fifty years of denial, the government settled with my grandmother for two hundred thousand dollars for my grandfathers greatly shortened life. If you are in that area...leave.

They've been leaking for decades. Probably reaching the river by now.

The government had the workers burying plutonium with their bare hands, and were purposefully releasing it on the population to see what would happen. I think the river is a foregone conclusion.

X-Rays, Scanners, Fukushima, Hiroshima, nuclear testing, just wasn't enough eh.

A radioactive river emptying into a radioactive ocean.
