Homemade explosives cause tense moments in Missoula

'Several apartments and trailer homes were evacuated in Missoula on Monday morning after some suspicious chemicals were found in one of the residences.

Officials say those chemicals were to be used in homemade explosives.

Missoula Police were called out at around 7 a.m. on Monday after receiving a call from the landlord of one of the apartments on Industry Street.

Police say the landlord reported the smell of suspicious chemicals, but when police arrived they discovered what they believed to be homemade explosives.

Missoula Police Department Patrol Captain Chris Odlin says the landlord originally suspected it was a meth lab, but says officers called for back-up, and evacuated the area, when they realized they were dealing with something more serious...'

Atlantic Ocean floor oozing massive iron cloud plume

'August 20, 2013 – ATLANTIC - Previously, oceanographers thought the Atlantic Ocean seafloor didn’t spit out as much iron as other regions. However, a recently discovered plume of iron billowing from the depth of the Atlantic Ocean suggests the seafloor may be pumping iron like a young Arnold Schwarzenegger. The oceanic iron cloud spreads for more than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) across the Atlantic from west of Angola, Africa, to northeast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The iron-rich waters flow 1,500 to 3,500 meters (4,921 – 11,482 feet) beneath the surface of the ocean. The complete extent and shape of the iron plume remains to be discovered. “We had never seen anything like it,” said Mak Saito, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute scientist and lead author of the study, in a press release. “We were sort of shocked—there’s this huge bull’s-eye right in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean. We didn’t quite know what to do with it, because it went contrary to a lot of our expectations.”

Arctic warming and our extreme weather: no clear link new study finds

'Is the dramatic decline of Arctic sea ice, spurred by manmade global warming, making the weather where we live more extreme? Several recent studies have made this claim.
But a new study finds little evidence to support the idea that the plummeting Arctic sea ice has meaningfully changed our weather patterns. The research, published today in Geophysical Research Letters, says links between declining Arctic sea ice and extreme weather are “an artifact of the methodology” and not real.
Earlier work, suggesting a connection between the disintegrating Arctic ice and weather mania in the mid-latitudes, is intriguing. It is based on the idea that the jet stream – the river of high altitude winds that steers our storms and positions cold snaps and heat waves – is slowing down and weakening due to a pronounced warming in the Arctic compared to other places, a phenomenon known as Arctic amplification. Rather than zipping right along a straight path, a more listless jet stream is now prone to straying so the theory goes.
“Just as a river of water tends to meander when it reaches the gentle slopes of coastal plains, a weaker jet stream tends to have steeper north-south waves,” explained Rutgers University atmospheric professor Jennifer Francis, in a guest blog post here at CWG. “The slower the waves move, the longer the weather associated with them will persist.”
When the jet stream gets stuck, trouble ensues: a storm dumps copious rains in the same place, a heat wave stagnates, and a drought grows more severe, for example.
Francis, a leading scientist of some of the research linking Arctic amplification and more extreme weather patterns in the mid-latitudes, said the unusual path of Superstorm Sandy may have been a consequence of the connection. The record loss of Arctic ice last fall favored a “block” or extreme slowing in the jet stream over Greenland that pushed Sandy towards the Jersey shore Francis contends.
“The block was what scared [Sandy] into the west,” Francis told the New Jersey Star Ledger. “It’s a very, very unusual pattern for a hurricane to take…”'

Sorry to vent but I just gotta get this off my chest. This story is just one more reason for me to say #%$@ IT, I'M DONE! I'm 30 years old and what kind of future am I looking at here? Everything I was raised to believe certainly isn't so. It's like we're in the twilight zone, right is wrong, war is peace, gay is the new straight, atheism is the new religion, material stuff is the new family, money is the new love. I'm fed up!

I've been working since I was 14, I joined the military right out of high school at 18. I thought that was the right thing to do, and I don't regret it, but man have my eyes been opened since I have been out. I have realized many of the folks I was quite literally willing to die for to protect are some of the most selfish, close minded people that could possibly exist.

I got a job as soon as I was out of the military. I did bounce around for a couple years trying to find something for me. I never did find anything I really love doing for work, but I did find a career worthy job, climbed the ladder and make a decent living now. I did everything right, or at least did everything in the manner in which I was raised, but what's the incentive anymore?

I work 40+ plus hours a week only to have 30% of my wages taken away automatically to be given to someone "less fortunate" then, when tax time rolls around, I'm told that I didn't give enough and still owe money. Then we are told that we can lower our tax liability by buying a house and having kids. Well my wife and I have been trying to buy our first house since 2008. I know, really bad timing on our part, too bad we didn't start just a couple years earlier, but every time we attempt to get financed we find out the standards to qualify have been raised because we make too much money (I am not a millionaire by any stretch of the imagination, we are comfortable though), however if we have kids and quit one of our jobs we could then qualify with government programs...

What did I just hear!? We make too much money!? One of us needs to quit working so we can buy a house!? What kind of backwards thinking is that? In addition to the that, the whole kids thing is really starting to piss me off. It's not for lack of trying that we don't have kids, we'd love to have kids, apparently it just ain't in the cards...

So we've pretty much given up on the house and kids. We've tried to set up contract for deed with family and that didn't work out, so now, because of our ever growing disgust of modern society we're thinking about cashing out our small savings/retirement accounts (not like the money is growing in those accounts anyways) and buying 20+ acres closer to my wife's family in Missoula, MT. We're currently in Billings, MT. We'd like to be off-grid, but not too far from civilization (not an issue since we're in Montana), grow most of our food and sell the surplus at farmers market. This would also allow me to start making a living building fine furniture and cabinets (dream I've always had). What's the point of buying the land a building a future though? If we are headed where I think we are headed then that will just be taken away as well.

I just can't see a positive future anymore for my wife and I. The path this country is on leads to no where good. I'm tired of busting my @$$ everyday just so some POS, that can't seem to stop breeding, can enjoy their "freebies" and still have the audacity to ask for more.

U.S. Dolphin Deaths Rise to 300; Cause Still a Mystery

'The spike in bottlenose dolphin deaths this summer is showing no signs of stopping: Nearly 300 of the marine mammals have died along the East Coast as of August 20, according to the federal government. The high death toll, covering an area that stretches from New York to Virginia, has been labeled an "unusual mortality event," and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has experts scrambling to figure out what's going on.

Based on the rapid increase in dead bodies washing ashore, and the broad geographic reach, "an infectious pathogen is at the top of the list of potential causes," according to NOAA's website.

"We realize that people are very concerned and anxious to learn what we know about the dolphin deaths that have been occurring along the mid-Atlantic coast over the past few weeks," Maggie Mooney-Seus, a spokesperson for NOAA Fisheries, told National Geographic by email.

Experts have collected quite a bit of information from various animals' blood and tissue samples, which they're testing for a variety of toxins, biotoxins, bacteria, fungi, and viruses, she said.

Several of the dead dolphins have tested positive for morbillivirus, a measles-like, airborne virus that's often fatal in dolphins. A morbillivirus epidemic hit East Coast bottlenose dolphins in 1987 and 1988, wiping out at least 900 animals and striking a major blow to that population of migratory mammals. However, there's no definitive cause yet, and some of the tests take weeks to complete, Mooney-Seus noted.

"We share the public's desire to get answers to what is causing this and are working as quickly as we can to get those answers."'

Disease watch: New Chinese bird flu may be worse than H7N9 virus

'August 24, 2013 – CHINA - A virus called H7N7 has been discovered in chickens in China, according to a new study published in the journal Nature. A team of Hong Kong researchers found the virus in about 25 percent of the fowl sampled, many of which also had the H7N9 virus. By testing the H7N7 virus on ferrets, the researchers found that it can be transmitted to mammals. “If (we) let this H7N7 continue circulating in chickens, I am sure that human infection cases will occur,” study co-author Guan Yi at the University of Hong Kong told AFP...'

Marine Biologist: Hundreds Of Dolphins Could Be Dying From Measles-Like Virus

'So far this summer, there have been about 230 dolphin deaths along the East Coast, prompting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to declare an unusual mortality event. That clears the way for an intensive scientific inquiry into what is causing the deaths.

No definitive conclusions have been reached, but many suspect the morbilli virus. The naturally occurring virus was ultimately blamed for the last major dolphin die-off, in 1987, when 740 dolphins died.

Marine biologist Kim Durham told CBS News that this type of virus resembles measles.

“When we were doing examinations, we would find they were very skinny animals,” Durham said. “They were compromised animals. Some of them had skin lesions — they were just very sick individuals.”

Durham added that the dolphins could be spreading the virus among themselves because of skin contact.

This year, several of the dolphins that washed ashore in New Jersey have tested positive for the virus.

The waves of dead dolphins started appearing in New Jersey in early July, and it hasn’t let up. Wednesday morning, the stranding center got a call about a dead dolphin that washed ashore in Sea Bright, the 62nd in New Jersey this year. But it was too badly decomposed and chewed up by sharks to warrant taking it for a necropsy at a veterinary center near Kennett Square, Pa., a four-hour round trip that’s exhausting volunteers.

'The virus that causes a deadly new respiratory disease known as Middle East respiratory syndrome, or MERS, has been found in a bat in Saudi Arabia. The finding suggests that animals may transfer the virus to humans.

The disease was first diagnosed in a Saudi Arabian man last September. Since then, 99 people have gotten sick from the virus and 48 of them died. Scientists know that the coronavirus that causes the disease is related to the one that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, and to viruses carried by bats. Unusual Whale Stranding Gives Scientists Rare Opportunity

'...The heart and part of the whale’s underside showed signs of hemorrhaging, a possible sign of traumatic injury. A bloody area, about the size of a large trash can lid, covered the whale’s sternum. And, the tissue in the area was filled with air bubbles, known medically as subcutaneous emphysema, another sign of trauma.

“I don’t think there’s any way those bubbles would be there if it hadn’t been hit,” Johnson said.

These findings are all consistent with the whale colliding with something, perhaps with a relatively small ship. The behemoth container ships that have been known to smash into whales often leave the mammals with massive fractures, dead long before they reach the shore. This whale had no broken bones — just a large, bloody patch beneath its skin. And it was alive when it arrived.

“We’ll get the microscopic exams back and verify we didn’t miss anything,” Johnson said...'

Volcanic 'geyser' erupts close to Rome airport

'Motorists on Saturday were alarmed to notice hot, stinking gas spurting from a newly formed crater in the middle of a roundabout close to the perimeter fence of Rome’s Fiumicino airport -- less than 900 yards from the end of a runway.

Cause of East Coast Dolphin Die-Off Found

'Federal scientists say a virus related to human measles is likely to blame for the mass die-off of bottlenose dolphins along the East Coast. Based on the last outbreak, they say it could affect the species until next year.

Since July 1, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says 333 dead or sickly bottlenose dolphins have washed up from North Carolina to New York. That's over nine times the historical average for strandings during this period. The bulk of those reports — 174 of them — have come from Virginia.

NOAA officials had already declared it an "unusual mortality event" and had been taking samples from dead dolphins to investigate the cause. So far, 32 of 33 samples tested for morbillivirus were either suspect (25 cases) or confirmed positive (seven cases), researchers with the agency told reporters Tuesday (Aug. 27)...
