Calm Before the Storm? What August Hurricane Lull Means

'Calls for an active 2013 Atlantic hurricane season, with six to nine hurricanes, have been met with silence by Mother Nature so far ...

... Dry, dusty weather conditions in the Atlantic have crippled tropical depressions and storms trying to swirl up into stronger weather patterns, Feltgen said in an email interview. Budding tropical storms such as Chantal, Dorian and Erin dissipated when they ran into wind shear and dry air, Feltgen said. Their remnants never impacted the United States, but did cause flooding in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, along with other island nations.

Tropical storms and hurricanes grow bigger by feeding off warm, rising, moist air. But the Atlantic's hurricane breeding ground has been dominated by dry, sinking air for much of the summer. Dust blowing west from the Sahara Desert may also have choked off storms forming offshore of Africa, though scientists debate the effects of the dusty air, called the Saharan Air Layer. NASA is currently studying the effects of the Saharan Air Layer on tropical storm formation with unmanned drones...'

Atlantic Ocean floor oozing massive iron cloud plume

'August 20, 2013 – ATLANTIC - Previously, oceanographers thought the Atlantic Ocean seafloor didn’t spit out as much iron as other regions. However, a recently discovered plume of iron billowing from the depth of the Atlantic Ocean suggests the seafloor may be pumping iron like a young Arnold Schwarzenegger. The oceanic iron cloud spreads for more than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) across the Atlantic from west of Angola, Africa, to northeast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The iron-rich waters flow 1,500 to 3,500 meters (4,921 – 11,482 feet) beneath the surface of the ocean. The complete extent and shape of the iron plume remains to be discovered. “We had never seen anything like it,” said Mak Saito, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute scientist and lead author of the study, in a press release. “We were sort of shocked—there’s this huge bull’s-eye right in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean. We didn’t quite know what to do with it, because it went contrary to a lot of our expectations.”

Federal investigation started on mysterious deaths of bottlenose dolphins at Indian River Lagoon, Florida - US

'On July 24, 2013 NOAA declared the mass die-off of bottlenose dolphins in Florida's Indian River Lagoon an "Unusual Mortality Event" - UME. This declaration will send federal resources and scientists to help teams already on the ground.
Indian River Lagoon suffered this year the worst bottlenose dolphin die-off on record. At least 54 of them mysteriously died since January and investigation so far showed both sexes and all ages are affected. All of them are thin and bony. (It is estimated that between 200 - 800 such dolphins live in the lagoon.)
The lagoon is troubled ecosystem and had numerous die-offs so far but scientists don't know if they are linked. Multiple investigations are ongoing...'

Dolphin deaths increase to 160 in Virginia

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The number of mysterious dolphin deaths has increased to more than 160.

Media outlets report additional dolphins were found along Virginia's coast on Monday. That put the deaths in August at more than 70 -- more than the annual average...'

U.S. Dolphin Deaths Rise to 300; Cause Still a Mystery

'The spike in bottlenose dolphin deaths this summer is showing no signs of stopping: Nearly 300 of the marine mammals have died along the East Coast as of August 20, according to the federal government. (Related: "Why Are Dolphins Dying on East Coast? Experts Alarmed." [link to news.nationalgeographic.com] )

The high death toll, covering an area that stretches from New York to Virginia, has been labeled an "unusual mortality event," and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has experts scrambling to figure out what's going on.

Based on the rapid increase in dead bodies washing ashore, and the broad geographic reach, "an infectious pathogen is at the top of the list of potential causes," according to NOAA's website.

"We realize that people are very concerned and anxious to learn what we know about the dolphin deaths that have been occurring along the mid-Atlantic coast over the past few weeks," Maggie Mooney-Seus, a spokesperson for NOAA Fisheries, told National Geographic by email.

Experts have collected quite a bit of information from various animals' blood and tissue samples, which they're testing for a variety of toxins, biotoxins, bacteria, fungi, and viruses, she said.

Several of the dead dolphins have tested positive for morbillivirus, a measles-like, airborne virus that's often fatal in dolphins. A morbillivirus epidemic hit East Coast bottlenose dolphins in 1987 and 1988, wiping out at least 900 animals and striking a major blow to that population of migratory mammals. However, there's no definitive cause yet, and some of the tests take weeks to complete, Mooney-Seus noted.

"We share the public's desire to get answers to what is causing this and are working as quickly as we can to get those answers."'

Cause of East Coast Dolphin Die-Off Found

'Federal scientists say a virus related to human measles is likely to blame for the mass die-off of bottlenose dolphins along the East Coast. Based on the last outbreak, they say it could affect the species until next year.

Since July 1, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says 333 dead or sickly bottlenose dolphins have washed up from North Carolina to New York. That's over nine times the historical average for strandings during this period. The bulk of those reports — 174 of them — have come from Virginia.

NOAA officials had already declared it an "unusual mortality event" and had been taking samples from dead dolphins to investigate the cause. So far, 32 of 33 samples tested for morbillivirus were either suspect (25 cases) or confirmed positive (seven cases), researchers with the agency told reporters Tuesday (Aug. 27)...

Water leaks at Fukushima nuclear plant could contaminate entire Pacific Ocean

'August 9, 2013 – JAPAN - Two and a half years after the Fukushima tragedy Japan does not want to admit how serious it is, but it is obvious the drastic environmental implications are to follow, Harvey Wasserman, journalist and advocate for renewable energy, told RT.

RT: Japanese officials have admitted a leak at Fukushima has been happening for two years and is worse than earlier thought. Why did it take so long to evaluate the actual repercussions of the tragedy and take decisive measures to tackle them?

HW: The Japanese authorities have been covering up the true depth of the disaster because they don’t want to embarrass themselves and the global nuclear industry and they are trying to open up another nuclear plant in Japan. When the Japanese people now find out that the accident is worse than we thought and they have been leaking many tons of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean for almost two and a half years, this is a catastrophe. Tokyo Electric has no idea how to control this accident. This is absolutely terrifying after two and a half years. To find out that these reactors have been out of control, now that they can’t control this they don’t know what’s going on. This is not a primitive backward country; this is Japan with advanced technology. It has very serious implications for nuclear power all over the world.

RT: Why the plant’s operator failed to contain the leak?

HW: Because they don’t know what to do. This has never happened before. You have three explosions; you have four nuclear reactors that are severely compromised. No one ever planned for this. This is an apocalyptic event. This is something that could contaminate the entire Pacific Ocean. It is extremely serious. The reality is that Tokyo Electric does not know what is happening and does not know how to control what is going on. Our entire planet is at risk here. This is two and a half years after these explosions and they are still in the dark. It’s terrifying.'

Fukushima now in state of emergency, leaking 300 tons of radioactive water into the ocean daily

'Japan's nuclear watchdog has now declared the leak of radioactive water from Fukushima a "state of emergency." Each day, 300 tons of radioactive water seeps into the ocean, and it's now clear that TEPCO has engage in a two-and-a-half-year cover-up of immense magnitude.

"I believe it's been leaking into the ocean from the start of the crisis two-and-a-half years ago," disclosed a 12-year TEPCO veteran named Suzuki-san (SOURCE)

"There are still reactor buildings we haven't gotten into yet," said another worker named Fujimoto-san. "So there's always the possibility of another explosion..."'

Fukushima in freefall: radioactive water filters taken offline, Tepco in desperation as leaks just won't stop

'After a 29-month cover-up, the Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) is now calling for international help and has all but admitted Fukushima's radiation leaks are spiraling out of control. In addition to the leaking water storage units that are unleashing hundreds of tons of radioactive water each day, Tepco now says 50% of its contaminated water filtration capability has been taken offline due to corrosion.

The result is that radiation leaks are escalating out of control and attempted remediation efforts are faltering. This is in addition to the fact the Japanese government's attempted brainwashing propaganda campaign has also been exposed. It attempted to convince people that if they drank beer or smiled, they would be immune to radiation poisoning. (Yes, this is how desperate they've become...)'

Dream from this weekend.

I was in my backyard watching a very intense meteor shower. There were all kinds of sonic booms and there seemed to be hundreds of of meteors crashing into the earth. It almost appeared to be daytime from the brightness of the meteors streaking across the sky. Oddly I was very calm and was just standing next to my wife watching the sky in complete awe of what I was witnessing. The way I was standing in my backyard indicated that all these meteors were traveling from west to east. You could hear people screaming and air raid sirens going off.

This time there were no screams or sirens, the entire community, including myself and my wife, were staring at the heavens in complete awe.

Researcher controls colleague’s motions in 1st human brain-to-brain interface

'On Aug. 12, Rao sat in his lab wearing a cap with electrodes hooked up to an electroencephalography machine, which reads electrical activity in the brain. Stocco was in his lab across campus wearing a purple swim cap marked with the stimulation site for the transcranial magnetic stimulation coil that was placed directly over his left motor cortex, which controls hand movement.

The team had a Skype connection set up so the two labs could coordinate, though neither Rao nor Stocco could see the Skype screens.

Rao looked at a computer screen and played a simple video game with his mind. When he was supposed to fire a cannon at a target, he imagined moving his right hand (being careful not to actually move his hand), causing a cursor to hit the “fire” button. Almost instantaneously, Stocco, who wore noise-canceling earbuds and wasn’t looking at a computer screen, involuntarily moved his right index finger to push the space bar on the keyboard in front of him, as if firing the cannon. Stocco compared the feeling of his hand moving involuntarily to that of a nervous tic.

“It was both exciting and eerie to watch an imagined action from my brain get translated into actual action by another brain,” Rao said. “This was basically a one-way flow of information from my brain to his. The next step is having a more equitable two-way conversation directly between the two brains.”'

Montana deer deaths could be linked to EHD

'Dead white-tailed deer are being found across north central Montana, with officials saying the deaths could be linked to a Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD).

Although the number of dead deer is not clear, reports indicate it could be dozens at the minimum.

Wildlife officials said EHD is spread among deer, primarily whitetails, by biting small flies...'

Hemorrhagic disease killing Wyoming, Montana deer

CHEYENNE — Hemorrhagic disease caused by two possible viruses has been killing dozens of white-tailed deer in Wyoming and Montana over the past month.

The deer are dying of internal bleeding, and tests at the Wyoming State Veterinary Lab in Laramie will determine if epizootic hemorrhagic disease or bluetongue is responsible. Both viruses are endemic, or native, to the region and cause outbreaks in wildlife from time to time...'

Authorities warn Colcord, Oklahoma residents not to drink tap water due to blood worm infestation

'August 29, 2013 – OKLAHOMA – The people of Colcord, Oklahoma, might need something a little stronger than Brita filters to remove the impurities from their drinking water. Blood worms — small, red insect larvae — have been appearing in water glasses and filters in the rural town. Authorities have warned Colcord’s 800 residents not to drink, cook with or brush their teeth with the worm-infested tap water. Schools in the area have been closed since Tuesday as officials try to figure out where the bright-red creatures came from and how long it will take to get rid of them...'

As far as all the die off's are concerned, I do think Fukushima is only a small part of the overall cause. I think there is something much bigger at play that is causing all of this.

Avian salmonella outbreak killing Billings-area birds

'Avian salmonella is responsible for an unusually high number of dead birds, particularly red crossbills, in Billings-area yards with bird feeders this spring, according to the Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks.

Wildlife disease specialists at the National Wildlife Health Center in Wisconsin identified the naturally occurring bacterium, possibly originating from contaminated food. Salmonella spreads among birds through their feces.

Since mid-May, dead birds have been reported around at least eight bird feeders in the Billings and Laurel areas. One resident had 50 dead birds so far, and it is likely that other die-offs went unreported...'

'Scientists report that many types of amphibians, especially frogs, are in a steep global decline likely caused by a mix of habitat loss, climate change, pollution and a virulent fungus. The downward spiral is striking particularly hard in the Caribbean, where a majority of species are now losing a fragile hold in the ecosystem.

Without new conservation measures, there could be a massive die-off of Caribbean frogs within 15 years, warned Adrell Nunez, an amphibian expert with the Santo Domingo Zoo in the Dominican Republic. "There are species that we literally know nothing about" that could be lost, he said.

Researchers such as Lopez and his wife, Ana Longo Berrios, have been fanning out across the Caribbean and returning with new and troubling evidence of the decline. In some places, especially in Haiti, where severe deforestation is added to the mix of problems, extinctions are possible.

It is part of a grim picture overall. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has found that 32 percent of the world's amphibian species are threatened or extinct, including more than 200 alone in both Mexico and Colombia.

"Everywhere we are seeing declines and it's severe," said Jan Zegarra, a biologist based in Puerto Rico for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service...'

'The rogue chytrid fungus that has devastated more than 200 kinds of amphibians worldwide has an accomplice: a second species that researchers have discovered attacking fire salamanders.

Populations of frogs, salamanders and their relatives have been dwindling worldwide, and in 1999 scientists identified a surprising contributing factor – the fungus now nicknamed Bd. This Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis was the first member of the phylum of fungi called chytrids found to attack, and often kill, vertebrates. Now genetic tests have identified a second vertebrate-killing chytrid, the newly named Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans....'

Oldest Solar Twin Identified: New Clues to Help Solve Lithium Mystery

'Aug. 28, 2013 — A team led by astronomers in Brazil has used ESO's Very Large Telescope to study the oldest solar twin known to date. Located 250 light-years away, the star HIP 102152 is more like the Sun than any other solar twin -- except that it is nearly four billion years older. This older twin may be host to rocky planets and gives us an unprecedented chance to see how the Sun will look when it ages....'

Astronomers Unravel the Lithium Mystery

'ESO's Very Large Telescope has helped an international team led by astronomers in Brazil identify and study the oldest solar twin known to date. According to scientists, the star twin is located 250 light-years from Earth.

The interesting discovery is that the star, HIP 102152, appeared akin to the Sun more than any other solar twin. It is about four billion years older. This discovery will enable scientists gain insight into changes in the Sun with increase in age....'

Bizarre alignment of planetary nebulae

'Astronomers have used ESO’s New Technology Telescope and the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope to explore more than 100 planetary nebulae in the central bulge of our galaxy. They have found that butterfly-shaped members of this cosmic family tend to be mysteriously aligned — a surprising result given their different histories and varied properties.

The final stages of life for a star like our Sun result in the star blowing its outer layers out into the surrounding space, forming objects known as planetary nebulae in a wide range of beautiful and striking shapes. One type of such nebulae, known as bipolar planetary nebulae, create ghostly hourglass or butterfly shapes around their parent stars....

Hubble Telescope Spots 'Cosmic Caterpillar' 6 Trillion Miles Long

'The Hubble Space Telescope has captured what scienitsts are describing as a "cosmic caterpillar" nearly 6 trillion miles long slinking through deepspace.

The celestial critter in the new Hubble telescope photo is actually a cloud of gas stretching one light-year (10 trillion kilometers) across, scientists say. This cloud is in the process of collapsing down under its own gravity to give birth to a star — but it's a race against time, because the established bright stars in its vicinity are fighting this process....'

Scientists to Announce 'Major Result' from Star Study Wednesday

'Astronomers working with the Very Large Telescope in Chile plan to announce a "major result" Wednesday (Aug. 28).

The finding relates to research on medium-size stars, scientists said. The results will "shed light on a long-standing mystery about stars like our own sun," according to a statement by the European Southern Observatory...'

Earth Life Likely Came from Mars, Study Suggests

'We may all be Martians.

Evidence is building that Earth life originated on Mars and was brought to this planet aboard a meteorite, said biochemist Steven Benner of The Westheimer Institute for Science and Technology in Florida.

An oxidized form of the element molybdenum, which may have been crucial to the origin of life, was likely available on the Red Planet's surface long ago, but unavailable on Earth, said Benner, who presented his findings today (Aug. 28; Aug. 29 local time) at the annual Goldschmidt geochemistry conference in Florence, Italy....'
