Hemorrhagic disease killing Wyoming, Montana deer

CHEYENNE — Hemorrhagic disease caused by two possible viruses has been killing dozens of white-tailed deer in Wyoming and Montana over the past month.

The deer are dying of internal bleeding, and tests at the Wyoming State Veterinary Lab in Laramie will determine if epizootic hemorrhagic disease or bluetongue is responsible. Both viruses are endemic, or native, to the region and cause outbreaks in wildlife from time to time...'

EHD fells deer and elk in numbers of states

'....Right now there are reports are of an entire herd of more than a hundred dead elk in northeastern New Mexico. Perhaps there are more than an hundred dead deer, mostly whitetails in central Montana. There are dozens of whitetail dead in North Dakota....

....2012 was a very bad year for EHD. Last year in Michigan there was an official count of 15,000 dead with estimates as high as 70.000. It is though it will take 3-5 years for the deer to rebound. Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Nebraska were hit hard too.

It is believed the EHD kills far more deer than Chronic Wasting Disease, although the viral agent is not so frightening as the all but indestructible prion....'

Wyoming health officials see spike in waterborne infections

'A microscopic parasite is infecting an unusually high number of people in Wyoming this year, with most of the illnesses occurring in Campbell County.

Health officials recorded 54 cryptosporidium infections in Wyoming for the first eight months of the year. That’s more cases than in either of the past two full years, according to Wyoming Department of Heath figures.

Nearly 75 percent of this year’s infections have been reported in Campbell County.

“We don’t fully understand all of the reasons for that,” said Kelly Weidenbach, an epidemiologist who monitors outbreaks of waterborne illnesses for the state.

It’s likely the actual number of infections is higher. Health officials would only be aware of cases where ill people sought medical attention....'

Water leaks at Fukushima nuclear plant could contaminate entire Pacific Ocean

'August 9, 2013 – JAPAN - Two and a half years after the Fukushima tragedy Japan does not want to admit how serious it is, but it is obvious the drastic environmental implications are to follow, Harvey Wasserman, journalist and advocate for renewable energy, told RT.

RT: Japanese officials have admitted a leak at Fukushima has been happening for two years and is worse than earlier thought. Why did it take so long to evaluate the actual repercussions of the tragedy and take decisive measures to tackle them?

HW: The Japanese authorities have been covering up the true depth of the disaster because they don’t want to embarrass themselves and the global nuclear industry and they are trying to open up another nuclear plant in Japan. When the Japanese people now find out that the accident is worse than we thought and they have been leaking many tons of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean for almost two and a half years, this is a catastrophe. Tokyo Electric has no idea how to control this accident. This is absolutely terrifying after two and a half years. To find out that these reactors have been out of control, now that they can’t control this they don’t know what’s going on. This is not a primitive backward country; this is Japan with advanced technology. It has very serious implications for nuclear power all over the world.

RT: Why the plant’s operator failed to contain the leak?

HW: Because they don’t know what to do. This has never happened before. You have three explosions; you have four nuclear reactors that are severely compromised. No one ever planned for this. This is an apocalyptic event. This is something that could contaminate the entire Pacific Ocean. It is extremely serious. The reality is that Tokyo Electric does not know what is happening and does not know how to control what is going on. Our entire planet is at risk here. This is two and a half years after these explosions and they are still in the dark. It’s terrifying.'

"I believe it's been leaking into the ocean from the start of the crisis two-and-a-half years ago," disclosed a 12-year TEPCO veteran named Suzuki-san (SOURCE)

"There are still reactor buildings we haven't gotten into yet," said another worker named Fujimoto-san. "So there's always the possibility of another explosion..."'

Fukushima in freefall: radioactive water filters taken offline, Tepco in desperation as leaks just won't stop

'After a 29-month cover-up, the Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) is now calling for international help and has all but admitted Fukushima's radiation leaks are spiraling out of control. In addition to the leaking water storage units that are unleashing hundreds of tons of radioactive water each day, Tepco now says 50% of its contaminated water filtration capability has been taken offline due to corrosion.

The result is that radiation leaks are escalating out of control and attempted remediation efforts are faltering. This is in addition to the fact the Japanese government's attempted brainwashing propaganda campaign has also been exposed. It attempted to convince people that if they drank beer or smiled, they would be immune to radiation poisoning. (Yes, this is how desperate they've become...)'

Understanding the radioactive legacy of Chernobyl and Fukushima

'When a massive tsunami slammed into Japan on March 11, 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant suffered serious damage, releasing radioactive materials that contaminated 3,500 square miles. It was the worst nuclear accident since the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, in the Ukraine. Many unanswered questions remain about the long-term effects of high radiation levels in the wake of Chernobyl....

....During the Chernobyl disaster, radioactive materials were spread over thousands of square miles. The most severely affected area, where most contamination is concentrated, is a 1,004 square miles area called the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone....

....researchers looked for evidence of albinism and tumors in wild birds. Albinism is a rare genetic mutation that manifests as an absence of melanin pigments in skin, feathers, and scales. Another type of genetic mutation is abnormal tissue growth called tumors. Both can be caused by radioactive contamination. Out of 1,669 birds examined, 6.65% showed signs of albinism and 2.5% had tumors. In comparison, birds examined for albinism and tumors in Denmark numbered just 0.89% and 0%, respectively. In addition, the scientists also found more cases of albinism and tumors in areas with higher background radiation levels....

....Bottom line: There is an urgent need to study the effects of radiation following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident that contaminated 3,500 square miles of land in Japan. The opportunity for comprehensive monitoring of radiation effects in nature were largely missed following the Chernobyl disaster in 1986....'

Dolphin deaths increase to 160 in Virginia

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The number of mysterious dolphin deaths has increased to more than 160.

Media outlets report additional dolphins were found along Virginia's coast on Monday. That put the deaths in August at more than 70 -- more than the annual average...'

U.S. Dolphin Deaths Rise to 300; Cause Still a Mystery

'The spike in bottlenose dolphin deaths this summer is showing no signs of stopping: Nearly 300 of the marine mammals have died along the East Coast as of August 20, according to the federal government. (Related: "Why Are Dolphins Dying on East Coast? Experts Alarmed." [link to news.nationalgeographic.com] )

The high death toll, covering an area that stretches from New York to Virginia, has been labeled an "unusual mortality event," and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has experts scrambling to figure out what's going on.

Based on the rapid increase in dead bodies washing ashore, and the broad geographic reach, "an infectious pathogen is at the top of the list of potential causes," according to NOAA's website.

"We realize that people are very concerned and anxious to learn what we know about the dolphin deaths that have been occurring along the mid-Atlantic coast over the past few weeks," Maggie Mooney-Seus, a spokesperson for NOAA Fisheries, told National Geographic by email.

Experts have collected quite a bit of information from various animals' blood and tissue samples, which they're testing for a variety of toxins, biotoxins, bacteria, fungi, and viruses, she said.

Several of the dead dolphins have tested positive for morbillivirus, a measles-like, airborne virus that's often fatal in dolphins. A morbillivirus epidemic hit East Coast bottlenose dolphins in 1987 and 1988, wiping out at least 900 animals and striking a major blow to that population of migratory mammals. However, there's no definitive cause yet, and some of the tests take weeks to complete, Mooney-Seus noted.

"We share the public's desire to get answers to what is causing this and are working as quickly as we can to get those answers."'

Marine Biologist: Hundreds Of Dolphins Could Be Dying From Measles-Like Virus

'So far this summer, there have been about 230 dolphin deaths along the East Coast, prompting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to declare an unusual mortality event. That clears the way for an intensive scientific inquiry into what is causing the deaths.

No definitive conclusions have been reached, but many suspect the morbilli virus. The naturally occurring virus was ultimately blamed for the last major dolphin die-off, in 1987, when 740 dolphins died.

Marine biologist Kim Durham told CBS News that this type of virus resembles measles.

“When we were doing examinations, we would find they were very skinny animals,” Durham said. “They were compromised animals. Some of them had skin lesions — they were just very sick individuals.”

Durham added that the dolphins could be spreading the virus among themselves because of skin contact.

This year, several of the dolphins that washed ashore in New Jersey have tested positive for the virus.

The waves of dead dolphins started appearing in New Jersey in early July, and it hasn’t let up. Wednesday morning, the stranding center got a call about a dead dolphin that washed ashore in Sea Bright, the 62nd in New Jersey this year. But it was too badly decomposed and chewed up by sharks to warrant taking it for a necropsy at a veterinary center near Kennett Square, Pa., a four-hour round trip that’s exhausting volunteers.

Two hours later, another dead dolphin, No. 63, washed up in Spring Lake...'

Genetic Similarities Between Bats and Dolphins Discovered

'Sep. 4, 2013 — The evolution of similar traits in different species, a process known as convergent evolution, is widespread not only at the physical level, but also at the genetic level, according to new research led by scientists at Queen Mary University of London and published in Nature this week.

The scientists investigated the genomic basis for echolocation, one of the most well-known examples of convergent evolution to examine the frequency of the process at a genomic level.

Echolocation is a complex physical trait that involves the production, reception and auditory processing of ultrasonic pulses for detecting unseen obstacles or tracking down prey, and has evolved separately in different groups of bats and cetaceans (including dolphins).

The scientists carried out one of the largest genome-wide surveys of its type to discover the extent to which convergent evolution of a physical feature involves the same genes.

They compared genomic sequences of 22 mammals, including the genomes of bats and dolphins, which independently evolved echolocation, and found genetic signatures consistent with convergence in nearly 200 different genomic regions concentrated in several 'hearing genes'....'

Millions in China at risk of exposure to arsenic-tainted water

Arsenic emissions from Vernon firm Exide pose 'chronic hazard'

'More than 250,000 people living in a broad swath of eastern Los Angeles, Boyle Heights, Huntington Park and other southeast cities face a "chronic hazard" from exposure to arsenic emissions from a Vernon battery recycler, according to air district officials.

Toxic emissions from the Exide Technologies plant have the potential to create "neurological changes, specifically a decrease in intellectual function in children," said Jean Ospital, health effects officer for the South Coast Air Quality Management District.

He stressed that there is no evidence indicating such a large number of people have been harmed; the health risk assessment shows only that they could be.

Regulators have been wrestling with what to do about Exide since a health-risk report released in the spring showed that elevated arsenic emissions from the plant were posing an increased cancer risk to more than 110,000 people.

A little-noticed portion of the same report mentioned the risk of chronic hazards, which is separate from the cancer risk, could affect as many as 252,000 people. But the information was not highlighted in public hearings or testimony before elected officials and thus caught many people by surprise when a Times reporter asked about the finding this week....'

Lobster Shell Disease Expanding North: One of Several Diseases of Marine Organisms Causing Worry

'Sep. 3, 2013 — Recent reports that lobster shell disease has turned up along the coast of Maine have Kathy Castro worried. The University of Rhode Island fisheries scientist has led a 15-year international effort to understand what causes the disease that has, until recently, been confined primarily to the waters of southern New England and Long Island Sound. If it expands as rapidly in Maine as it did in Rhode Island waters, it could have a dramatic effect on the iconic Maine fishery....

....Castro believes that there must be a number of factors that, together, have created the conditions that have led to lobster shell disease.

"And it's not just lobsters that are battling diseases," she noted. "We've got clam disease, oyster disease, an eelgrass disease, striped bass disease, scallop disease, and a starfish disease, too. Recently we received a report of increased parasites in bluefin tuna. With changing temperature regimes, the ocean is so confused and it's providing so much conflicting information."

The good news, according to Castro, is that lobsters with shell disease can still be eaten without any adverse effects to consumers, since only the shell is diseased. And the lobster population in Rhode Island waters is at levels seen in the 1970s before the unexplained increase in abundance the occurred in the late 1980s and 90s. Yet Castro is still determined to solve the mystery....

...."We've always talked about lobsters being the canary in the coal mine for the health of our marine environment," Castro said. "Maybe we need to pay more attention to what they're telling us."'

Most North Atlantic hurricanes travel roughly parallel to the East Coast and make landfall approaching from the south. The October 2012 storm was unusual because it took a left turn and approached from the east, smacking into New Jersey at nearly a right angle. Sandy’s nearly perpendicular angle to the shore intensified its destructive storm surge....'

Climate Change Doubles Likelihood of Sandy-Level Floods in NYC

'Climate Central -- As the anniversary of Hurricane Sandy approaches, a new study points to the rapidly escalating risk of Sandy-magnitude flooding events in the New York City area. The study, published Thursday in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, found that sea level rise has already doubled the annual probability of a Sandy-level flood in New York City since 1950.
Rising seas are a consequence of manmade global warming, as well as local shifts in land surface elevations. Sea level rise has accelerated in recent years, from a rate of 1.7 millimeters per year between 1901 to 2010, up to 3.2 millimeters per year between 1993 and 2010.
Depending on how much sea levels increase by the end of the century, the study said Sandy-like flooding could occur once every few decades in Manhattan, and on the order of once a year in parts of New Jersey and coastal Connecticut....

....With 1.2 meters, or about 4 feet, of sea level rise by 2100, the study projects that Sandy-level flooding would occur at intervals of every few decades at The Battery and Sandy Hook, and annually at all other tide gauge stations studied, from Virginia northward to Newport, Rhode Island....'

How to Combat Green Country's Cricket Invasion

'Tulsa -
Crickets seem to be out in droves around Green Country-- and viewers said they are just as much of a nuisance as ever.

OSU Extension Educator Brian Jervis said the crickets in the area were at their worst numbers last year around the time of the Tulsa State Fair. They appear to be out in droves slightly earlier this year. Jervis said 2013's mild weather could have affected that.

"I think we are going to see a little more before it gets any better," Jervis said....'

Lackluster Hurricane Season Could Still Rev Up

'....The lack of hurricanes can be blamed on westerly winds, Weber said. So far this summer, there have been strong winds blowing from west to east across the Atlantic, which have systematically destroyed developing storms and prevented them from strengthening and growing into well-organized hurricanes, Weber said. Hurricanes are fueled by the transfer of heat from the ocean to the upper atmosphere, but they depend on a relatively symmetrical, rotating system to get going. They form best in calm conditions, with warm surface temperatures, Weber added....'

Fukushima now in state of emergency, leaking 300 tons of radioactive water into the ocean daily

'Japan's nuclear watchdog has now declared the leak of radioactive water from Fukushima a "state of emergency." Each day, 300 tons of radioactive water seeps into the ocean, and it's now clear that TEPCO has engage in a two-and-a-half-year cover-up of immense magnitude.

Birth Defects Cluster in Washington Remains Mysterious

Health officials investigating a spike in cases of a fatal birth defect in central Washington state have found no common cause linking the cases, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The investigation began last year when a local hospital alerted the state health department to an unusually high number of babies born with a rare birth defect called anencephaly, in which parts of the baby’s brain and skull are missing.

The investigators identified 23 women in a three-county area whose babies had anencephaly between January 2010 and January 2013. The anencephaly rate was more than 8 per 10,000 births, which is four times higher than the national average of one or two cases in every 10,000 births, according to the report....

Baby bust: U.S. births at record low

'The U.S. fertility rate fell to another record low in 2012, with 63.0 births per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44 years old, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That's down slightly from the previous low of 63.2 in 2011.

It marked the fifth year in a row the U.S. birth rate has declined, and the lowest rate on record since the government started tracking the fertility rate in 1909. In 2007, the rate was 69.3.

Falling birth rates can be considered a challenge to future economic growth and the labor pool.

"If there are fewer younger people in the United States, there may be a shortage of young workers to enter the labor force in 18 to 20 years," said University of New Hampshire demographer Kenneth Johnson. "A downturn in the birth rate affects the whole economy."

It takes 2.1 children per woman for a given generation to replace itself, and U.S. births have been below replacement level since 2007....'

Hemorrhagic disease killing Wyoming, Montana deer

CHEYENNE — Hemorrhagic disease caused by two possible viruses has been killing dozens of white-tailed deer in Wyoming and Montana over the past month.

Interstellar Winds Buffeting Our Solar System Have Shifted Direction

'Sep. 5, 2013 — Scientists, including University of New Hampshire astrophysicists involved in NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) mission, have discovered that the particles streaming into the solar system from interstellar space have likely changed direction over the last 40 years.

The finding helps scientists map our location within the Milky Way galaxy and is crucial for understanding our place in the cosmos through the vast sweep of time -- where we've come from, where we're currently located, and where we're going in our journey through the galaxy.

Additionally, scientists now gain deeper insight into the dynamic nature of the interstellar winds, which has major implications on the size, structure, and nature of our sun's heliosphere -- the gigantic bubble that surrounds our solar system and helps shield us from dangerous incoming galactic radiation.'

A very intense storm hit where I live last night (Billings, MT). We lost power for 20 hours. The wind was insane (clocked at 73 MPH at airport, I'm quite certain it got much faster than that in certain areas though), the lighting was crazy! Some places had hail over 5 inches deep and tons of flash flooding. We're supposed to get more storms tonight! Check out the images at the links below.

Re: Signs of the End? ~ Mass Animal & Insect Die-Off, Natural & Man-made Disasters, Strange Events

And now it's global COOLING! Record return of Arctic ice cap as it grows by 60% in a year

* Almost a million more square miles of ocean covered with ice than in 2012

* BBC reported in 2007 global warming would leave Arctic ice-free in summer by 2013

* Publication of UN climate change report suggesting global warming caused by humans pushed back to later this month

A chilly Arctic summer has left nearly a million more square miles of ocean covered with ice than at the same time last year – an increase of 60 per cent.
The rebound from 2012’s record low comes six years after the BBC reported that global warming would leave the Arctic ice-free in summer by 2013.
Instead, days before the annual autumn re-freeze is due to begin, an unbroken ice sheet more than half the size of Europe already stretches from the Canadian islands to Russia’s northern shores.

'HELENA - A shift in the earth's magnetic polarity is costing the Helena Regional Airport $75,000.

The Federal Aviation Administration informed the airport manager nearly a year ago that navigation numbers listed on the runway need to be upgraded due to a slight shift in magnetic north.

Construction crews have been busy blasting off the old numbers, getting ready to paint the new ones....'

Colorado flooding cuts off mountain towns, kills 3

'LYONS, Colo. (AP) — Heavy rains sent walls of water crashing down mountainsides Thursday in Colorado, cutting off remote towns, forcing the state's largest university to close and leaving at least three people dead across a rugged landscape that included areas blackened by recent wildfires.

After a rainy week, up to 8 more inches fell in an area spanning from the Wyoming border south to the foothills west of Denver. Flooding extended all along the Front Range mountains and into some cities, including Colorado Springs, Denver, Fort Collins, Greeley, Aurora and Boulder....'
