Water leaks at Fukushima nuclear plant could contaminate entire Pacific Ocean

'August 9, 2013 – JAPAN - Two and a half years after the Fukushima tragedy Japan does not want to admit how serious it is, but it is obvious the drastic environmental implications are to follow, Harvey Wasserman, journalist and advocate for renewable energy, told RT.

RT: Japanese officials have admitted a leak at Fukushima has been happening for two years and is worse than earlier thought. Why did it take so long to evaluate the actual repercussions of the tragedy and take decisive measures to tackle them?

HW: The Japanese authorities have been covering up the true depth of the disaster because they don’t want to embarrass themselves and the global nuclear industry and they are trying to open up another nuclear plant in Japan. When the Japanese people now find out that the accident is worse than we thought and they have been leaking many tons of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean for almost two and a half years, this is a catastrophe. Tokyo Electric has no idea how to control this accident. This is absolutely terrifying after two and a half years. To find out that these reactors have been out of control, now that they can’t control this they don’t know what’s going on. This is not a primitive backward country; this is Japan with advanced technology. It has very serious implications for nuclear power all over the world.

RT: Why the plant’s operator failed to contain the leak?

HW: Because they don’t know what to do. This has never happened before. You have three explosions; you have four nuclear reactors that are severely compromised. No one ever planned for this. This is an apocalyptic event. This is something that could contaminate the entire Pacific Ocean. It is extremely serious. The reality is that Tokyo Electric does not know what is happening and does not know how to control what is going on. Our entire planet is at risk here. This is two and a half years after these explosions and they are still in the dark. It’s terrifying.'

Fukushima now in state of emergency, leaking 300 tons of radioactive water into the ocean daily

'Japan's nuclear watchdog has now declared the leak of radioactive water from Fukushima a "state of emergency." Each day, 300 tons of radioactive water seeps into the ocean, and it's now clear that TEPCO has engage in a two-and-a-half-year cover-up of immense magnitude.

"I believe it's been leaking into the ocean from the start of the crisis two-and-a-half years ago," disclosed a 12-year TEPCO veteran named Suzuki-san (SOURCE)

"There are still reactor buildings we haven't gotten into yet," said another worker named Fujimoto-san. "So there's always the possibility of another explosion..."'

Fukushima in freefall: radioactive water filters taken offline, Tepco in desperation as leaks just won't stop

'After a 29-month cover-up, the Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) is now calling for international help and has all but admitted Fukushima's radiation leaks are spiraling out of control. In addition to the leaking water storage units that are unleashing hundreds of tons of radioactive water each day, Tepco now says 50% of its contaminated water filtration capability has been taken offline due to corrosion.

The result is that radiation leaks are escalating out of control and attempted remediation efforts are faltering. This is in addition to the fact the Japanese government's attempted brainwashing propaganda campaign has also been exposed. It attempted to convince people that if they drank beer or smiled, they would be immune to radiation poisoning. (Yes, this is how desperate they've become...)'

Understanding the radioactive legacy of Chernobyl and Fukushima

'When a massive tsunami slammed into Japan on March 11, 2011, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant suffered serious damage, releasing radioactive materials that contaminated 3,500 square miles. It was the worst nuclear accident since the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident, in the Ukraine. Many unanswered questions remain about the long-term effects of high radiation levels in the wake of Chernobyl....

....During the Chernobyl disaster, radioactive materials were spread over thousands of square miles. The most severely affected area, where most contamination is concentrated, is a 1,004 square miles area called the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone....

....researchers looked for evidence of albinism and tumors in wild birds. Albinism is a rare genetic mutation that manifests as an absence of melanin pigments in skin, feathers, and scales. Another type of genetic mutation is abnormal tissue growth called tumors. Both can be caused by radioactive contamination. Out of 1,669 birds examined, 6.65% showed signs of albinism and 2.5% had tumors. In comparison, birds examined for albinism and tumors in Denmark numbered just 0.89% and 0%, respectively. In addition, the scientists also found more cases of albinism and tumors in areas with higher background radiation levels....

....Bottom line: There is an urgent need to study the effects of radiation following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident that contaminated 3,500 square miles of land in Japan. The opportunity for comprehensive monitoring of radiation effects in nature were largely missed following the Chernobyl disaster in 1986....'

Birth Defects Cluster in Washington Remains Mysterious

Health officials investigating a spike in cases of a fatal birth defect in central Washington state have found no common cause linking the cases, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The investigation began last year when a local hospital alerted the state health department to an unusually high number of babies born with a rare birth defect called anencephaly, in which parts of the baby’s brain and skull are missing.

The investigators identified 23 women in a three-county area whose babies had anencephaly between January 2010 and January 2013. The anencephaly rate was more than 8 per 10,000 births, which is four times higher than the national average of one or two cases in every 10,000 births, according to the report....
