All of this is for nothing ultimately. It plays to the mainstream like "oh, look at those crazy anarchists trying to wreak havoc. Oh, cops shot 25 of them. Well, that's what you get when you go out there trying to create mayhem". I mean, people here just don't get it! They don't understand what's at the ROOT of the protest. It was very annoying with the Occupy crowd...they couldn't articulate why they were upset, why they were there. It played on TV like "omg, look at those babbling druggies and losers camping and shitting and raping in our parks".

Protests, to have any impact on those asleep, should number in the millions. MILLIONS. Then the mainstream would be scratching their heads and saying "what am I missing that so many of my fellow countrymen are all protesting?". And they might seek more information. And it might sink in, for some anyway.

Does anyone have a feel for just how many are asleep vs awake in the US?

You say well. Prior to the occupy movement, there was the 15M here in Spain, and what characterized it, among other things, was its undefined ideological positioning and lack of positive proposals or solutions. That is partly tru, albeit that is how it was described by the MSM, but people inside it, or people in the know, knew it was a movement against the dictatorship of the markekts, the loss of democracy and transparency leading to scam and frauds, and it proposals were a constituent process fiinshing in better and more plural goverment system (I could go more concrete in the case of Spain, for example regarding the "autonomias" affair or the Electoral Laws but it is not the point

Who was in the know? Anyone older certainly wasnt. Anyone only receiveng MSM information, even from supossedly left-winged newspapers or TV channels wasnt. You would need to be in the street or be a power user of the internet or social networks to be in the know (I am talkling about 2008 and the beggining of the crisis here)

Then the movement expanded rapid assimiling the general sickness of the people in so many areas, being abe of recruiting large amounts of indignados towards any goal.. for a social engineer it must have been a dream, being able to summon a critical mass and try to encompass it with your memes and such.

Sorry I digreded there. But I sometimes think that Spain has been a laboratory for the NWO, TPTB or whatever. What I wanted to say relating your post is that regarding social momvements, what you see in US is somehow similar to what you could see in Spain before, there is a critical mass of people that knows something needs to be done, but there are no cristalization of objectives, no heads, no precise courses of actions. Though there are (here we call it "Transición 2.0"). Maybe is something inherent to this kind of social movement as it is made anonimously by a mesh of diverse people..
