The Tunnels of NYC's East Side Access Project (33 photos)
A huge public works project is currently under construction in New York City, connecting Long Island to Manhattan's East Side. Deep underground, rail tunnels are extending from Sunnyside, Queens, to a new Long Island Rail Road terminal being excavated beneath Grand Central Terminal. Construction began in 2007, with an estimated cost of $6.3 billion and completion date of 2013. Since then, the cost estimate has been raised to $8.4 billion, and the completion date moved back to 2019. When finished, the line will accommodate 24 trains per hour at peak traffic, cutting down on commute times from Long Island, and opening up access to John F. Kennedy International Airport from Manhattan's East Side. Collected here are images of the progress to date, deep beneath Queens and Manhattan. 33 photos here [link to www.theatlantic.com]

Hope those engineers know what they are doing that whole area is likely to implode soon.

Whites creating tunnel system that blacks will transit on beating whites on the train all day. How are they inspired by being involved in creating this?

Oh, yes. In Rome, in Italy we are concerned about the subway beneath the Colosseum, the risk of collapse. Smiley

Rome's Colosseum Risks Collapse

Works to extend Rome's underground rail network could pose a threat to the structural stability of one of the most famous landmarks in the world – the Colosseum.
Many Italian newspapers, such as Il Fatto Quotidiano are carrying stories which claim that the extension of Rome's underground rail network could result in the collapse of the Colosseum – one of Rome's main landmarks and perhaps the most famous historical monument in the world.

Amazing feat of engineering.

However, look at all that soft mud down there.

They are undermining the integrity of the foundations of the city.

Collapse is likely.

I'll bet you $$$ the whole thing will create more traffic.

this is north of nyc

From early work replacing the bridges over two parkways to the five main stages of construction by Ecco III Enterprises and Yonkers Contracting Co., the project has taken 14 years and is now more than two years behind schedule.

I would question the motive of the this tunnel.

Is the traffic really that bad?

I think it is more a payoff to the rich on Long Island who don't want to interact with the poor folk on Subways.
