But it just so happened that a 10,000 ton space rock did hit on the same day that they were telling us that a 40,000 ton space rock would not hit.

They claim they could not "see" the 10,000 ton space rock.

But they have no problem looking at the surface of the sun.

You can't find asteroids during the day. Yes, even I can see the surface of the sun just fine with my telescope, but likewise I cannot detect asteroids during the day. The sun is many orders of magnitude brighter than any asteroid, the latter of which cannot be seen through the bright daytime sky glow caused by the sun.

Ok well one way to look at it is we should have some interesting meteor showers in the future..two of the comets being new ones..Lemmon and Ison..that means two more debris clouds Earth gets to eventually go through... or is Pannstarrs new also? If so, that makes three.

I've got filters for mine and some that are different colors pretty cool.

Can't wait till these babies show up ..up north so i can get some shots of them.

I've got a good view to the south, southwest, west and north but my view of the east is partially blocked by the Chugach Mountain Range.

Sucks but the light pollution is still pretty low where im at and the time of year they are coming by is perfect for viewing in Alaska.

Hopefully the weather cooperates and its not rainy.

You didn't say "backyard telescopes." You said "telescopes." "Telescopes." Yes, they use telescopes to look at the sun. And the telescopes they use to look at the sun are not designed for nor used for finding small asteroids approach earth from its day side. That would require a fleet of orbiting telescopes with a very different design and a very different mission. They wouldn't be looking at the sun with those telescopes though.

Actually, it does change the meaning.

Sort of like putting "Dr." Astro in quotes changes the meaning considerably.

In the context of what you said, it did not change the meaning except to suggest that you thought it was incredibly stupid that I should say NASA uses telescopes to look at the sun. In fact it was incredibly stupid for you to suggest that they do not, and once you realized this you tried to change the meaning to backyard telescopes. Yes, putting my official title in quotes does insulting imply that you think I do not have the title, but I don't give a damn what you think. I do, which is the real beauty of the situation.

In all seriousness some people may want to get and familiarize themselves with a Sextant. If these things get out of control the Sextant may come in handy.
