Scubadiverbambi1 User ID: 1212638 United States 02/23/2013 03:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | YAKIMA, Wash. – Federal and state officials say six underground tanks holding a brew of radioactive and toxic waste are leaking at the country's most contaminated nuclear site in south-central Washington, raising concerns about delays for emptying the aging tanks. Quoting: TheTruthNeverLies The leaking materials at Hanford Nuclear Reservation pose no immediate risk to public safety or the environment because it would take perhaps years for the chemicals to reach groundwater, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee said Friday. But the news has renewed discussion over delays for emptying the tanks, which were installed decades ago and are long past their intended 20-year life span. "None of these tanks would be acceptable for use today. They are all beyond their design life. None of them should be in service," said Tom Carpenter of Hanford Challenge, a Hanford watchdog group. "And yet, they're holding two-thirds of the nation's high-level nuclear waste." Read more: [link to www.foxnews.com] This should go viral and it's getting very little attention! Re-read this folks; Nuclear waste is being contained in vessels WAY past their intended usage time and is now LEAKING!!!!!!!!!! Are they gonna sell us another bag a lies like they did with Fukushima? Might be a good time to sell your real estate while you still can if you own any around there |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 9916572 United States 02/23/2013 04:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Technically, this isn't quite an "immediate" threat, so we don't have to worry about the massive leak of nuclear waste headed imminently into the groundwater. Typical politician huh? That's how these assholes think. I guess if it's not gonna be picked up in groundwater while he's still in office, it will happen when the next guy is in there, no sense alarming the public about it. It's only something that we know for sure is gonna happen. Only a million gallons have leaked so far, that's not much is it? And the number of tanks that are leaking keeps rising every time they have a hearing on this, but oh yeah, don't be alarmed people this is obviously all under control. They'll have this all figured out and solved easily within the next couple decades. Sure it will likely take a little longer than that, but you gotta understand, it's a big government, lots of moving parts, as Obama likes to put it. |

My grandfather was a nuclear physicist at the plant in the 40's. He is dead of lymphatic cancer. My mother is currently battling stage four breast cancer and was a child living in the area and swimming downstream from Hanford when operations like this [link to en.wikipedia.org] took place. After fifty years of denial, the government settled with my grandmother for two hundred thousand dollars for my grandfathers greatly shortened life. If you are in that area...leave. Whats wrong with this picture? How Bacteria Clean Up Nuclear Waste [link to news.discovery.com] I don't think that bacteria are going to help with this one. The stuff in those tanks is a hellbrew of really nasty highly radioactive acids and compounds from the early days of uranium enrichment and plutonium processing. Just how does one get rid of ridiculously radioactive hydrofluoric acid slurry? I don't think anyone knows, probably why they stuck it all in those tanks and kicked sand over it. |
