CECIL HOTEL IN L.A. - What A Place To Die - Reviews Here
[link to www.tripadvisor.ca]

I love reading horror stories like these -- the most recent ones are from November 2012.

Read the reviews of people who stayed here, because it was a good deal, and the lobby looks like a 1940's movie set.

Aside: Any thoughts, as well, on the film "CHINATOWN" and the water situation? Is California doomed... again...?

Confirmed - right in the middle of Skid Row.

Laboratory for TB epidemic.

Murder scene of ELISA LAM.

TB Test: LAM-ELISA. -- Per other great Thread here today.

I have spent the last half hour reading some of the almost 200 reviews.

Been laughing my head off.

Sure, some of them say 'cheap hotel, okay, like a hostel'

But the OTHER ONES!

Sample:

"The cockroaches are bigger than the staff, and more polite."

Some strange people evidently live at the hotel year-round.

One couple arrived at their room on the 5th floor where a madman had just stabbed somebody, and the LAPD were all over the place.

Leaving in the morning for the short walk to the subway, a couple was harangued by a big guy trying to sell them "white stuff."

Paper thin walls.

Even with a private toilet, rather than the shared ones on all the floors, it sounded like someone was urinating in their room.

No Air Conditioning - and L.A. gets over 100 degrees F. in summer.

LAPD helicopter pad nearby.

The sirens will wake you before the alarm goes off in the morning.

"We came here for a anniversary holiday, and my husband spent the whole weekend apologizing for the hotel."

So the Chinese gal from Vancouver, Elisa Lam, just wanted a central L.A. location, and she was on a budget.

She didn't figure on it taking 1-1/2 hr. to get to the beach.

The bus service stops in front of the hotel.

But - If you have ever been in L.A. and taken public transit, you know it is an experience all its own.

Poor kid.

She should never have travelled there alone.

I stayed in a budget hotel in LA ten years ago. The hotel itself was fine, a beautiful building dating back to the 1920s. But the location - well, let's say MacArthur Park before the cleanup was lively to say the least. There was a corpse I had to walk by one morning on the sidewalk around fifty yards from the lobby!

Public transport in LA can be unusual too. I still have nice surveillance tapes we made of all the crazy people talking to themselves.

Coming from the UK however and being used to the booze-fuelled battlegrounds that our town centres become every weekend, it wasn't too bad. Very sad story about this poor girl dying there.

I used to love the song so much:

Jack Jones singing, "L.A. Breakdown and Take Me In."

I cried listening to it on the airplane headphones, as I was coming back to California years ago, after spending time on the East Coast.

I was in my early 20s.

Within ten years I was gone for good.

It turned sour very, very fast.

I want to spend the night in the LaLaurie house in New Orleans. It's a private residence now but that would be cool.

Funny enough, Virgin Air who fly from the UK played some kind of cheesy LA song as we were landing which made me and my wife both cry.

For all its very obvious flaws I guess there is something about the West Coast which has a kind of mystical and dreamlike vibe to it. Like the Valhalla we collectively wished for a thousand years ago.

Now THIS LADY didn't die in the Cecil Hotel.

She was gunned down in her car. You may remember the story. November 5, 2010.

She was a movie industry/music industry publicist.

Funny how the LAPD handled this one -- They claimed she was shot execution style by a guy on a bicycle, for no reason at all, through the passenger side window of her 2-door Mercedes, as she was driving down to Wilshire Boulevard from Sunset, after a premiere party for the film "Burlesque".

Attendees:

Cher, Christian Aguilera, The Kardashians, Will Farrell, Ryan Seacrest, and other celebs.

CASE CLOSED. The LAPD went to question a Black guy who was a person of interest with a long rap sheet, and he shot himself as they approached him in the lobby of his apartment building. Very strange story.

Harold Smith (the suicide) had boasted to pals he had done the hit on Chasen for $10,000, but he hadn't been paid yet.

Correction - he did receive the pay-off.

Just goes to prove that the scummy sections of Hollywood are not limited to rooms with cockroaches in the Cecil.

Sadly, she could have stayed at many beach hotels for the same price.

I stayed once at a really rundown gorgeous place outside of New Orleans. I was the only guest. The Black housekeeper was a little distressed and embarrassed.

The owner was in the hospital with AIDS. I think he died.

Yup, it was straight out of Tennessee Williams.
