Phenylalanine %50 of Aspartame... 5 steps from meth.

but if it IS active, i'm pretty certain that phenylalanine is one of a million products of this superfun thing called phenethylamine (either that or i've got it backwards -_-. phenethylamine is this really simple structure known as a neuromodulator. it's probably a bit of a stimulant, not unlike the amphetamines, but it's hard to tell, because the stuff gets deaminated and made into other compounds pretty swiftly in the human brain&body. you can really only get its effects if you're taking something called a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (which binds to the stuff that breaks down phenethylamine).

oh man. i can't believe this is my lazy answer. anyway.

so my understanding is that phenethylamine becomes phenylalanine becomes tyrosine (or is it tryptamine?) becomes all kinds of neat crap. eventually ending up at dopamine (in some cases; though a lot of it becomes other stuff, like serotonin and what-have-you), which in turn becomes norepinephrine which becomes epinephrine (but nobody cares about epinephrine unless their throat's closing up in an allergic reaction).

so the short version of my answer would be that it might have some cool stimulant-type properties. but first of all, without mao inhibitors (rasagiline is the neatest/safest [the safety of maois is pretty relative, of course] example of these in my completely unhumble opinion), its stimulant effect will probably be really negligible and short-lived.
