Dog food recall announced

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa —Hy-Vee issued a voluntary recall Friday of certain bags of Hy-Vee dog food.

The food may have elevated levels of a chemical contaminant commonly found in corn, aflatoxin.

Hy-Vee said routine random tests conducted by the Iowa Department of Agriculture indicated higher-than-normal levels of aflatoxin in some samples of Hy-Vee dog food produced at a Kansas City.

Pets exhibiting symptoms of illness including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums or diarrhea should consultant a veterinarian.

The recalled products were distributed to Hy-Vee stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin between October 26, 2012, and January 11, 2013.

Yep.......I know of one dog that was killed by the last recall. Super sweet golden lab.

Fortunately none of my 3 dogs get this brand.

Re: Dog food recall announced
This is sad

From wikipedia [link to en.m.wikipedia.org]

Aflatoxin has potential to lead to liver disease in dogs; however, not all dogs exposed to aflatoxin will develop liver disease. As with any toxic exposure, development of aflatoxicosis is a dose-related occurrence. Some dogs that develop liver disease will recover; those exposed to large doses for extended periods may not.

Low levels of aflatoxin exposure require continuous consumption for several weeks to months in order for signs of liver dysfunction to appear.[13] Some articles have suggested the toxic level in dog food is 100–300 ppb and requires continuous exposure/consumption for a few weeks to months to develop aflatoxicosis.[14] No information is available to suggest that recovered dogs will later succumb to an aflatoxin-induced disease.

Re: Dog food recall announced
I cook for my pets...I would no more give them junk food than I would my kids.

My friend recently came home from India and was watching me make the dog food..she asked me if that is what we were having for dinner and was shocked when I said it was for the dogs and she said that most people in India didnt eat that well.

I almost felt guilty

I buy that super expensive no grain kind. was thinking I've been a sucker but now I am glad. No freakin corn. Dogs don't eat a diet of corn naturally. I have these companies

Dogs can't digest corn, it shouldn't be in their food period.

Hopefully no-one looses their furbabies over this.
