Having my third vitrectomy (eye surgery) of 2013 on Monday
I am 31 years old and have been diabetic since I was born. 3 Years ago I had a partially detached retina in my right eye which was repaired with laser. A month ago the eye re-detached and I was forced to get a vitrectomy with C2F6 gas. 1 week later the eye re-detached and they performed the surgery with C3F8. This lasted up until 2 days ago when the eye began to re-re-detach. I am now scheduled to go in for a 3rd vitrectomy, this time with oil, on Monday.

What really concerns me is my employer went out of business a few weeks before the first detachment in January. Yesterday I received a letter in the mail saying our insurance group policy was cancelled by the bankruptcy appointed trustee and that at the end of February our insurance will be cancelled, regardless of whether we already paid for COBRA coverage or not. This means I will be trapped with silicone oil in my eye but uninsured and unable to have it removed. This has me very concerned.

As for results, I see extreme waviness in the repaired eye following both vitrectomies. My OCT looks like a steep plateau in the middle. My doctor said it may have been caused by the surgeon when he tried to flatten out the retina. I also suffer from extreme double vision after both surgeries.

Does anyone know how long the oil can be left in the eye? How is living with the oil in my eye going to be like? Some have described it as being drunk, others as being dizzy or sea sick or trying to walk on a moving train or boat. What do people think of having oil left in the eye indefinetely?

See if they can bill you for the follow up ahead of time.

I would look at doing this in another country. We have the highest cost of medical care.

Problem is the follow up is another surgical procedure, in a hospital, all of that. Too many people involved, doctor, hospital, etc for that. Also, the procedure comes a month after the initial procedure so I don't think that would work.

Otherwise, it's a good idea though.

Thanks, mate. I'm trying to look at this and the recovery as a "vacation" from work. Bright side of things, and all that.

Even if I were willing to entertain having eye surgery in Thailand, you can not fly when you have this oil in your eye since it changes pressure at different altitudes and the result could be blindness. When you wake up from the surgery they already have a band around your arm you are supposed to wear until the bubble is removed that says you can not fly and no driving to different altitudes and then a bunch of messages from EMT's to not administer you various drugs which could also result in blindness.

Ah, sorry to hear of your troubles. My hubby has had numerous retinal detachments in both eyes, not from Diabetes, but from a post-virus autoimmune disorder he later developed. He had the oil in for a month before it was removed, and the oil replaced with saline. The saline was resorbed and replaced with the body's own vitreous. Maybe you could ask that saline be put in at the start so no need to remove anything later? Just a thought....God's blessing and healing be upon you brother!

Unfortunately, I've already had two attempts using gas in the past month so the oil is a necessity at this point.

Was your husband able to see through the oil at all? Was it opaque, translucent, transparent?

Thanks!

He could see through it, although not clearly. He also said there were "bubbles" in it that would move around as he moved his eyes, like "floaties" but more so. The doc would only do one eye at a time for this reason.

IF you could get the second operation done WITHOUT the insurance coverage ( say to hospital " Yes, I'm with the same company as before and they ask no questions/do no checking ) once the bills come in, etc. just pay them say $100 a month, every month. Generally speaking, they can do nothing BECAUSE, your NOT refusing to pay; just stretching OUT the payments.

Suggested this to ex who had a hospital bill she couldn't pay all at once. That was over a year ago. They get $20 a month.

Ughh. I might have to live with that for several months until I can get insurance again.
