smart move , any branch has its benefits, and dont listen to the clowns who tell you not to join , how would they know anyways 99 % never joined so what do they know. good for you dude you can save alot of money in the service.

I was in the Navy ---- OP DON'T JOIN. I have no idea what the IT relevant rating does, but my guess is they have BADLY outdated technology that you won't even get to touch mostly. Count on pushing a mop for your first four years basically. I was an AT, and my NEC was 6704 - CASS operator/maintainer. CASS stands for "Consolidated Automated Support System" which is an automated electronics test system that consists of a MicroVAX III (oooo so HIGH TECH!!!) with testing apparatii based on memory mapped I/O peripherals. The shit is a joke, and they are desperately trying to replace it since it cannot live to its overhyped promise. BTW, this is basically the second best rating/NEC next to nuke (I did not want to take the nuke rating).

The Navy is full of mosterous sociopaths, and count on getting blackballed if you are taller than your supervisor, have a last name/ethnicity he doesn't like, have to compete with some chick he is getting sucked off by, etc etc. Seen it all --- when you get "blackballed" they will have people make shit up on you so that you get 'written up' and/or send you TAD in perpetuity.

If you REALLY want to go military/military like for technical related stuff, I'd suggest the USAF or Coast Guard.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 35035713

I'd suggest Coast Guard too. Big fish in a little pond. Navy is little fish in HUGE OCEAN.

Just a word from someone who served...dont give any medical or physical complaints, they will put you in a place thats called the "zoo"....no lie, its a place they place recruits that want out before they deploy...its a 2 week holding evaluation away from the others, before they release you back to civilian life.

I'm joining the navy.

I'm in my later 20s, so I'm a little late, but ready.

Thinking going into the IT part...

You are to be admired- the military will present opportunies for a future career. And all Americans thank you. You care what happens to our country. GOD Bless brave soldier and a safe return - be wise and pay attenttion. Learn. Boot camp is tough but it's important! I am a 66 year old woman and without a doubt you are Special!

Dumbbsflag

You think the military would actually kill Americans. I think the military would turn on the government way before it ever came to that point. Besides, the military makes up about 1 % of the the US population. Remember all the other Amercian citizens who own guns, they out number the military by millions.

BAD BAD BAD Idea to join any military services!!!! You will end up all f'd up from the vaccines for life. You sign on the dotted line means you consent to deadly experiments. You will die a miserable death that chronic illness brings.

Great idea, the. 8 years I was in took me all over the world and made some great life long friend. If I didnt mess up my back in afghanistan i would still be in. Don't listen to what these people say, you will enjoy it. America still has the greatest military in the world, and as long as politics from obama and washington dont get in the way we could crush anyone. After basic when you have your weekend pass. Catch the metra into Chicago and go to benny's chop house. Best steak of my life.

It was about a 7 month wait, which is quick as I live in Illinois but is will agree some states are taking over a year wait times with vets at a 100 rating

Re: I'm joining the Navy - wish me luck, bad idea, or best idea?
I know vets that have been waiting for 10+ years. The new vets get a lot more than the older forgotten ones. It's not getting any better and yes you got rated very quickly. VA care is horrible and they are unable to properly diagnose and treat chronic health issues. However if you go after mental health diagnoses you will get faster ratings as well.

To OP joining the Navy...make sure you document everything. Go to sick call for a blister and have it documented. When you get out make sure to have copies of all your medical records taken prior to leaving. Walk out the door with them. Don't let them send them to you. Have them in hand. I've seen too many vets suffering.

Op listen to this, and if you only stay in 4 years. Just remember this when your are out processing. They will ask you are their any medical issues that occurred when you served. You write down everything, I don't care if you were banging a woman and threw out you back, if it happened while you were in the military write it down.

I have heard stories and that is a shame. Most of the va reps truly want to help. But I can see why you said what you said earlier in that the government does not fund them as much as they need to be able to help all vets in a quick and proper manner.

I was in San Diego RTC as well. Of course this was during REAGANS first term, so I guess that makes me a few years older.

Back then, we wore beards, smoked INSIDE the ship, down in the berthing bunk areas.

Re: I'm joining the Navy - wish me luck, bad idea, or best idea?
Is OP a dude or a chick? THAT makes all the difference.

If the OP is a chick, then get out by any means necessary - fake sickness, get pregnant, cut off your leg, or whatever. Chicks are ruined by military service, and never recover to be decent babes again.

If you're a dude, what's in it for you? Do you get laid? The money sucks balls, so that's not a reason. Perhaps you can make contacts, or go to some country that you can establish a home in, or find a girl. Otherwise, think long and hard - military will change you, and not always the way you wish. There's the thing about being property of the US, rather than your own man. And the shots - who knows what the fuck they will do to you. The DOD has not yet settled, or even agreed with the Agent Orange damage from back in the 1970's.

Think long and hard.........
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 34211220

Well technically we're all sort of the property of the government from what I hear, thanks to our birth certificate and social security, etc. Something about admiral maritime law: [link to reality-bytes.hubpages.com]
