But it is a common mistake so not really your fault. The truth is GERMANS have no humor! you are mistaken as well. maybe it is the language barrier that makes different nations incompatible regarding humor. if one know a foreign language as good as their mother tongue, jokes and humor come naturally and easy to understand. i personally like how, in english, can be played with words and pronounciation, we don´t have this in german. he's right, Germans have little to no humor. it's not a language barrier. they don't understand why Americans laugh and smile so much. not that they don't enjoy themselves, they just enjoy life in a different way than we do, which doesn't result in laughing and smiling. a lot of Europeans and Russians are like that. Americans, English and Australians are the ones who are different. it must be an Anglo thing. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 35001787 being constantly sarcastic is not a nice trait anyway. if she's a nice girl, just accept her for what she is, and try not to be an arse all the time when you're with her, or, ditch her and find a skank with a sense of humour Im not sarcastic in a mean personal way, more like in a general way to point out things I think are ridiculous, unnecessary or stupid. Im self deprecating With it as well. People find it funny, its good in social situations, its part of my personality, always has been. But my GF just doesn't get it! She takes everything literally. Im constantly saying "no baby, thats not what I or they mean" even when im surrounded by others. Yep, nailed it!!....the only one who thinks you're funny IS you I tolerate guys like you for about 5 mins...then I knock you teeth down your throat, take your girl and leave you laughing with yourself. Does the girl that I'm with actually see you suddenly punch me in the face, after kicking it for 5 minutes, Causing teeth to go flying? And This sort of violent passive aggressive behavior would convince her that you are not Psycho who might one day do that to her face? lol the OP is funny... OP: Sarcasm is a dying art. NOBODY gets it anymore, not just Germans. Everybody takes things so seriously today. |

You mean, you don't have puns in German? we do have them, but not as much as you have. it is really difficult to find them in german language. we have ambiguity, of course, but it is different.. it does not come from the similar sound while pronounciating a word, but from the exact same word with a different meaning in a different context. difficult to explain, i am lacking of examples.. i have a not so good one: in context of "easter" in german the sentence "ich gehe meine eier suchen" would mean "i go looking for my (easter)eggs" as well as " go looking for my balls". (but most of us don´t assume the second meaning when someone says this sentence). so it is the same word "eier" with different meanings, one the "real" meaning, one the "casual" one. but in english, i noticed there is many ambiguities by different words but with a similar pronounciation. which makes it sometimes difficult to understand a joke. |

I really like her. She's everything I want in a gf... sweet, determined, sincere, beautiful...not a fake like so many girls I know. The only problem is She's Like seriously gullible and doesn't understand American sarcasim. I am trying to help her but im getting tired of having to explain Myself all the time as if im talking to a 6 year old! Plus my friends have noticed and Im afraid shes going to get strung along and hurt. Parties are dangerous affairs for her and I hesitate to take her... How can I help her understand American culture better? Will she learn? Will she always be kind of "magoo?" (for lack of a better word) Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1530426 Does something get lost in the translation? I don't know how I would do, if I was learning a foreign language and trying to understand jokes. Is she fluent in English? |

But she is not good with idioms, banter and slang. when she speaks fast, to keep up, She will confuse her syntax, leave out crucial words and end her sentences awkwardly. Im helping her! |
