Anonymous Coward User ID: 34802778 Germany 02/24/2013 07:34 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This girl, who comes from Frankfurt, and I have been dating a little over two months, since she came to the US to study this semester. I really like her. She's everything I want in a gf... sweet, determined, sincere, beautiful...not a fake like so many girls I know. The only problem is She's Like seriously gullible and doesn't understand American sarcasim. I am trying to help her but im getting tired of having to explain Myself all the time as if im talking to a 6 year old! Plus my friends have noticed and Im afraid shes going to get strung along and hurt. Parties are dangerous affairs for her and I hesitate to take her... How can I help her understand American culture better? Will she learn? Will she always be kind of "magoo?" (for lack of a better word) Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1530426 |

But its others as well. Now maybe I need all new friends, who take everything literally, all the time, so that she would feel more comfortable but thats not really realistic. She wants to be "in my life" but theres a language and cultural barrier. Why not be real? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 35035713 United States 02/24/2013 07:16 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | as i am having a master´s degree in cynism and, as well, in sarcasm and i am a german girl, maybe - without using these devices of eloquence - she is just not as good with the english language as she would need to be to understand your kind of humor. maybe she is totally lacking understanding of sarcasm in german, too, but this would make look her just "dumb". Haha, I just love how you start off your post in a stereotypical German way -- so say this in such a way -- "I am a technical expert in some finely nuanced aspect of human behavior which is as far from something technica as you can get". Very charming and unmistakably Teutonic! |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25413197 OP: Sarcasm is a dying art. NOBODY gets it anymore, not just Germans. Everybody takes things so seriously today. people losing their humor. especially in a "serious" nation as germany. i know many really sarcastic people, but sarcasm is "negativity". and many as well don´t understand it here, but from my experience, it´s the dumb ones who don´t understand it, as "brain" and the ability to think "around the edge" (as we say here) is needed to understand sarcasm. I agree with you. Sarcasm is not really humor. It is passive aggressive behavior that is designed to hurt other people. It has its place once in a while, but one should never use it on a loved one or a friend (unless you're trying to get rid of them). Say what you mean and mean what you say. |

When your sarcasm turns to anger because, well, because you just dont get German humor? I hope she doesnt give you the short rope to hang yourself, like you seem to be giving her... |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2836766 I just spoke with your girlfriend. It is NOT that she doesn't understand your humor. It turns out you're just not fucking funny. Isn't it supposed to be, "She always laughs at my jokes when I'm banging her. In fact I just asked my football team on twitter, and they all said that she laughs at their jokes while they are banging her to". "She always laughs at my jokes when I'm banging her. In fact the football team all say she laughs at their jokes too." Da-boom... let the mind fill in the blanks... |
