I live in Sunny Florida, we garden 12 months out of the year.

My Garden:

Vegetable Garden

Kale
collard
Swiss Chard
Spinach
Lettuce
Cabbage
Carrots
Broccoli
Radishes
Tomato
Bell Pepper
Cucumber
Squash
Zucchini
Arugula

Fruit Garden:

Watermelon
Canalope

2 - 1500 gallon pools of Chlorella pyrenoidosa

I water my gardens by dipping the Watering Bucket into the Chlorella pool, and just walk the rows.

The Chlorella nutrients have "Exploded" my gardens ;-)

We make "Swamp Juice" with the Kale, Collards, Carrots, Tomato and Cucumber and add about 2 table spoons of Chlorella to each glass ....stir and gulp!

Super duper Nutrition

Lettuce is planted from seed. Very easy to grow. If you don't have room in the garden, you can plant the seeds in 8 inch planters. Fill the planters full of potting soil, sprinkle 20 or 30 seeds evenly over the soil, place the planter in a warm and sunny area. The seeds sprout quickly, and produce well. Leaf lettuce is delicious on sandwiches and in salads.

My favorites are : Green Ice, Black Seeded Simpson.

Pick up several packets and sow the seeds 2 weeks apart for an "ongoing" harvest. You can plant lettuce anywhere.

Even a caveman can do it. ha ha

What about growing cabbage on the east coast? Do you grow that like lettuce? When do you plant the seeds and does it need a lot of sun? How long does it and lettuce take to grow? Harvest time?

Re: Growing cabbage. Start the seeds indoors in seed starter mix. Danish ball is the best for cooler climates. You can also plant Michihili cabbage in early April. This is a cylinder type cabbage and grows upward. You peel off the bottom leaves, and the upper stalks keep growing. Or if you prefer, you can buy the small plants at a garden center. Usually it's head cabbage at Lowes or even Wal-Mart. Buy them next week and plant them soon. And don't forget the onion "sets." These are tiny baby onions you plant in the soil and they grow up to be big onions. Follow directions on the package. Oh ! Dollar Tree and other discount sometime have them for a dollar. 25 bulbs in a package That's a good deal.

Don't forget broccoli. You can direct seed them in the soil next week. They will sprout as soon as warmer days appear.

If you want to maximize space, you can't go wrong with the blended variety of Asian greens. One mix is called Mesclun, and one packet sows a row 6 feet long and maybe 16 inches wide. It has several lettuces, Asian broccoli, Kyoto, Osaka, the packages are different, depends on where you buy them. The greens are tasty and you can use them for stir fry and salads. The Mesclun will do well in 3 hours of difused sunlight.

Get going and get growing.

Re: Living healthy, prepping * Grow Your Own Food * Shared Tips and Advice
OP,

You asked about herbs. If you have limited space, grow them in hanging baskets. It will prevent slugs and snails from chewing the leaves. Many herb plants do well in planters and containers.

Check Dollar Tree...They have seed starter mix, potting soil, hanging baskets, all for a dollar each. The culinary herb seeds are 4/1.00. Pick up a few of the following: basil, chives, parsley, dill, oregano. These are the most popular herbs to cook with, and they are also good in salads and soups. Read the back of the packets, and it will give you sowing instructions, days to harvest.

Consider a dish garden. This would be a 12 inch plastic planter. Fill it with potting soil, and sprinkle several herbs seeds on top of the soil. You can grow several different herbs in one pot. Keep it close to the house, so you'll be able to snip-snip leaves for cooking. Plant 5 seeds of each variety on top of the soil. They will sprout and fill in the container. You'll have a lush herb garden that takes up very little space. Most herbs do well in 3 to 5 hours of sunlight.

Lowes and Walmart, even supermarkets have 5 inch herb plants for sale. Look there as well when shopping.

Anything else? Happy to help you.

OP,

Three links that will help you in your search for organic seeds, plants and general information.

[link to www.cooksgarden.com]

[link to www.organicseedfinder.org]

[link to parkseed.com]

Also check with your local Library. They should have tons of garden books.

If you have any questions, I'm here on weekends looking at threads. So I will see your questions.
