An interesting thing to consider is that Japan actually has better state-of-the-art military tech than the United States. In fact, a lot of the best U.S military hardware (processors for targeting systems, etc) comes from Japan.

Having said that, if Japan cut the crap and tore this BS Pacifist constitution to shreds they could enlarge what is already the most advanced military into a 1-2 million strong killing machine.

In that scenario, think 1940s Japan with superior military tech (including nukes).

And they're saying that Japan can whip China's ass in its current 'defensive/pacifist' form.

I will suggest that in a conflict between those nations there would be no real winners. Let us hope that they remain at peace.

I doubt anybody will be driving tanks to the disputed islands. This is an air and naval battle. For all the hoopla about China they still lag behind technologically. China has a history of pulling stunts in an effort to get respect, but they are only stunts. The media jumps all over it.

For example the Chinese sub that turned up right in the middle of a carrier group. The media went wild. "How did they get a sub that close to a carrier?" "What does this mean?"

It means that it was a peace time event when the US navy wasn't filling the sea with sona buoys and when the good (whale maddening) sonars weren't being used. The Chinese got in front of the carrier group and sat there silent until they could surface right in the middle of the US ships. A BS stunt that wouldn't work nearly so easily in war time because anti-sub operations would be in full swing.

China has a few good destroyers, but the vast majority of their fleet is sub-standard by any Western standards and Russian standards, too.

Their airforce is a little better off than their navy. They actually have a couple of airframes that are very competitive. Their numbers are small however, and a bad day against Japanese top notch air defenses could easily cut their numbers in half.

Japan has plenty of nukes, that was what Fukushima was all about. They imported plutonium from the us, and was refining it at Fukushima, officially its called Mox fuel, but the intention was all about making nukes with it.

China on the other hand, has all of its nukes underground on rails, movable in tunnels, and cant be taken out.

Japan sits basically on a big volcano, and cant tunnel down.

So good luck Japan. we will miss all the Walkmans and televisions.

After scalar EM wave technology, wich happened in the 60's nuclear devices can be ignited in their silos, remotely, so after all, nukes is outdated, and a treath and menace, to their own forces.

And since Russia is the leader in this technology, and since China and Russia has been working together, its more than a small chance that China has this technology.

In a conventional war, it will boil down to resources. While China may seem to have the upper hand with a large standing army and now lots of manufacturing, its quite energy starved with the rising demands it has. This is why China petrol has been forging agreements in Latin America, Middle East, Africa, trying to meet demand. Without oil & gas, their industry and military establishment won't be able to do much long-term.

There's more to fighting a war than military hardware.

Japan = Army of less than 1 million

Nukes are the great equalizer. No one can win an all-out war these days.
