Japan didnt overrun China, they controlled key cities. The organized peasants armies kicked them out. It didnt happen over night, but in the end China defeated Japan.

If Japan were to fight a war against China, the challenge would be for them to turn it into a long term war of attrition. The weakness of the Chinese is the same weakness that did in the Tsarist Army in World War I, the potential for political unrest at home.

Japan, by contrast, would have greater unity and the ability to keep at it longer. If they build a stronger navy and coastal defenses, I think the could become an island the Chinese could not invade, and should China enter into such a war, the political consequences of failing to the People's Republic would be immense.
