Blizzard Warning, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas...UPDATE: National Guard Called In To The Texas Panhandle

Good Lord...I'm glad to hear y'all are safe and sound. Buckeye is ok too from what I can tell. Ive been reading on twitter how people are making fun of us in Texas because of a "little snow." What they don't understand is we don't have armies of snow plows and mountains of salt sitting around like they do up North. I'll betcha that the people who are stuck on the roads are probably helping each other stay safe. Its the Texas way.

Considering the Weather Service was only calling for 4 to 8 inches Yesterday Morning in our area...I'd call this a miss, though they have been diligently updating the forecasts...

It's a perfect storm in plains terms, tropical moisture moving up onto the plains, cold front coming down, and a strong low pressure system riding the frontal boundary right across the middle of us...

What the folks on the East Coast call a Noreaster, what we call a Blue Norther...

I figured he had when the Fritch Paper was reporting they were sending in the National Guard, but they should've just stayed put until this evening when the wind dies down...

Pfft. They said the same thing for Dallas-FT Worth a few years ago when we got a foot of snow when it was supposed to be 1-3 inches. What a pain it turned out to be for everybody trying to get home.

That was the Super Bowl storm..I remember it well! I put a bunch of weight in the back of my SUV and drove around pulling people out of ditches for free to build up my real life Karma!

I'm in SA also and it's trash day. They haven't come yet, but trash cans are all over the neighborhood. It's crazy. We have a fire warning from the wind.

Well, this is the worst I've ever seen. They had really bad blizzards up here in 1957 and 1889, and according to the data, this is certainly comparable with those storms...

I'm not worried about me you understand, I'm fine. The Electricity is still working (knock on wood), house is warm, the temps outside aren't terrible until you factor in wind chill...

I worry more about my animals in things like this, the Livestock losses are going to be unbelievable up on the baldies (the flat country), and the feedlots will be dragging deads for weeks, luckily I have my cattle in a pasture here in Texas with good cover, and thank God for that, but they're going to need some hay in the next few days, and I suspect it's going to be awhile before I can even get down the road to them...skid loader will be useless in this deep snow, and my tractor is in New Mexico...

And this happened right in the dead middle of calving season up here...so I'm praying my babies will be okay. Them old cows are pretty savie though, and it's always surprising how good they come out of these things...

What could you do? This will hit the cattle ranchers another blow, coming on the heels of the drought. :-(

I am predicting that with this snow load that pole building roofs will collapse too. Hopefully the wind will blow the roofs clean.


I am reading of 6 to 10 foot drifts out your way. That is not an unsubstantial amount, even for snow country up north.

We'll say a prayer for them. It is always heartbreaking to see the losses to livestock and wild life in the big storms and floods. :-(

Hope yours all weather the storm OK.

You can't do anything, If you're animals have found a decent spot to ride out the storm, you're better off just leaving them in that spot until the storm passes. you just ride it out and do the best you can to try and look after your animals once the blizzard is past.

Luckily, they are predicting it will warm up some over the next couple of days before the next front, so maybe we'll get some good melt before the next round...

Your post made me really sad Saddletramp. With the drought over the past few years, the price of hay (if you can find it), and now this...It's certainly going to take its toll on an industry that has already been hit really hard. I pray all the livestock makes it through this. (and the people too)

Whiteouts were also reported in Oklahoma, where as of 10 a.m. Central time, the state had closed all highways in six counties -- Ellis, Harper, Woodward, Beaver, Texas and Cimarron -- until further notice.

"Roadways and ditches are snow packed with no visibility, and are very slick and hazardous. All travel is discouraged," the Oklahoma Department of Transportation said. As much as 16 inches of snow could fall in western areas of the state, the weather service said.

Being from the Texas panhandle I have tons of friends and family who live there. Ive been watching Facebook all day and it looks pretty bad but nothing to crazy. Ive seen it like that many times before when i was a kid. It looks like the biggest problem is snow drifts. However, its definitely not something to be take lightly. A few of my friends who have big ass 4x4 truck where out rescuing people who where trying to go to work but got stuck and didn't make it.
