Hubs just told me he's going in to work tonight. He manages a hotel in our little town and the overnight person already called off. We live as far out of town as she does, but she has a d***ed 4 wheeldrive pick up. We have a d****ed PT Cruiser. Hockley Co. doesn't have snow plows, they have road graters/dirt levelers. I'm not so mad that she called off, I'm mad that hubs thinks that stupid, little car will make it through this mess. AND...the owner lives right behind the hotel. I'm SO sick of no one listening. Sorry for the rant. He grew up in Ohio, too, so he knows what's out there. I think he's forgotten we're not in snowplow land anymore. He also thinks he's indestructible. We're too old for this! |

Ive been watching Facebook all day and it looks pretty bad but nothing to crazy. Ive seen it like that many times before when i was a kid. It looks like the biggest problem is snow drifts. However, its definitely not something to be take lightly. A few of my friends who have big ass 4x4 truck where out rescuing people who where trying to go to work but got stuck and didn't make it. Down here in Midland it's blowin like I've never seen before (and I've lived here a LONG time!). The snow stopped a long time ago - what we got was blowing parallel to the ground), but the dirt is thick and ugly. Visibility is maybe 1/4 mile here at the house, and I would guess the wind is a constant 40-45, with gusts about 50 or 60. We thought we got everything secure last night, but stuff has blown away that has never blown before.  For anyone still in the path of this storm - don't waste time or procrastinate. I'm on the southern edge of this storm and it is everything they are forcasting and maybe more! Ya'll keep us posted on how things are going, Saddletramp and TexanBuckeye. Mine works in the oilfield as a pumper. He went out early today to beat the worst of the storm. Was on top of a tank battery when the main wind hit. Called to tell me he was nearly blown off! Hope to hear all the family is back in town and ok soon. Hubby, daughter, grandson, son-in-law and son all work out in the field. Sure keeps the tension level high in bad weather!! Stay safe! If you have to be out, be prepared with a charged cell phone, an emergency kit with food, water, blankets, flares and a shovel." We live out in the middle of cotton fields, so the only snow that didn't blow away is in the drifts. We don't have the drifts like you do, either. Hopefully, the wind will come down and they can start plowing out here. Just talked to family in Lamesa. The sun is out, but the wind is blowing. Lamesa and Wilson were the only school districts in the area to HAVE school today. Poor kids! |

I worry more about my animals in things like this, the Livestock losses are going to be unbelievable up on the baldies (the flat country), and the feedlots will be dragging deads for weeks, luckily I have my cattle in a pasture here in Texas with good cover, and thank God for that, but they're going to need some hay in the next few days, and I suspect it's going to be awhile before I can even get down the road to them...skid loader will be useless in this deep snow, and my tractor is in New Mexico... And this happened right in the dead middle of calving season up here...so I'm praying my babies will be okay. Them old cows are pretty savie though, and it's always surprising how good they come out of these things... Your post made me really sad Saddletramp. With the drought over the past few years, the price of hay (if you can find it), and now this...It's certainly going to take its toll on an industry that has already been hit really hard. I pray all the livestock makes it through this. (and the people too) We've got hay to burn here, but it's a bit of a long haul...
