Re: Blizzard Warning, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas...UPDATE: National Guard Called In To The Texas Panhandle
Hi guys. I'm fine. Most of the snow is just blowing somewhere else. We don't have anything like Saddletramp has. My front window is covered in ice, though. Visibility is still about 1/4 mile.

I'm mad, though. Hubs just told me he's going in to work tonight. He manages a hotel in our little town and the overnight person already called off. We live as far out of town as she does, but she has a d***ed 4 wheeldrive pick up. We have a d****ed PT Cruiser. Hockley Co. doesn't have snow plows, they have road graters/dirt levelers. I'm not so mad that she called off, I'm mad that hubs thinks that stupid, little car will make it through this mess. AND...the owner lives right behind the hotel. I'm SO sick of no one listening.

Sorry for the rant. He grew up in Ohio, too, so he knows what's out there. I think he's forgotten we're not in snowplow land anymore. He also thinks he's indestructible. We're too old for this!

In fact after 5 to 8 years of drought in this area, we're just glad to get any moisture we can going into the Spring...

Being from the Texas panhandle I have tons of friends and family who live there. Ive been watching Facebook all day and it looks pretty bad but nothing to crazy. Ive seen it like that many times before when i was a kid. It looks like the biggest problem is snow drifts. However, its definitely not something to be take lightly. A few of my friends who have big ass 4x4 truck where out rescuing people who where trying to go to work but got stuck and didn't make it.

I dunno, I've seen some bad one's before, but this one is probably a bit worse than anything I saw in the 80's & 90's...of course the one on your doorstep always looks like the worst. It'll look better when the wind stops and the sun comes out...

Hey Saddletramp, TexanBuckeye, and all other Texans posting here - hope ya'll all stay safe and that your property and animals survive and do well.

Down here in Midland it's blowin like I've never seen before (and I've lived here a LONG time!). The snow stopped a long time ago - what we got was blowing parallel to the ground), but the dirt is thick and ugly. Visibility is maybe 1/4 mile here at the house, and I would guess the wind is a constant 40-45, with gusts about 50 or 60. We thought we got everything secure last night, but stuff has blown away that has never blown before. blink

For anyone still in the path of this storm - don't waste time or procrastinate. I'm on the southern edge of this storm and it is everything they are forcasting and maybe more!

Ya'll keep us posted on how things are going, Saddletramp and TexanBuckeye. Keeping ya'll in my prayers!

Oh yeah, TexanBuckeye - I understand the hubby thing!!! Mine works in the oilfield as a pumper. He went out early today to beat the worst of the storm. Was on top of a tank battery when the main wind hit. Called to tell me he was nearly blown off! Hope to hear all the family is back in town and ok soon. Hubby, daughter, grandson, son-in-law and son all work out in the field. Sure keeps the tension level high in bad weather!!

Stay safe! And hope your son does too!!!!

Central OK reporting in here, near Tinker AFB.

Above freezing, mid 30s, light drizzle after a morning of heavy rain.

Look at the Southern Plains radar now!!!

The whole thing seems to be swirling now, centered somewhere around Lawton OK.

Flights are still leaving out of Will Rogers airport in OKC.

It's coming.

Just because we have light drizzle, light winds now means nothing. It's coming.

56 out of OK's 77 counties already declared disaster areas.

All of the panhandle highways are shut down.

Rain turning to sleet now up between Edmond and Guthrie (N of the OkC metroplex)

Yep I'm in Amarillo and just heard they are calling in the National Guard. We got a call from the electric company saying that there are outages in our area and they can't get to us because the roads are impassable. Praying ours stays on and this crappy snow goes away!!!

Here's what Kansas governor had to say and they are USED to snow:

Kansas' governor on Sunday extended a state of emergency declaration to include the new storm.
"This storm has the potential to be more dangerous than last week's storm," Gov. Sam Brownback said. "So, we ask you to stay off the road unless it's absolutely critical. If you have to be out, be prepared with a charged cell phone, an emergency kit with food, water, blankets, flares and a shovel."

[link to www.cnn.com]

Tell hubby if he does feel this is critical to his survival to brown nose to his motel tyrant, then charge his cell phone and take the above precautions. Be sure about the shovel, toilet paper and paper towels plus water and windshield washer deicer fluid.Take trash bags as it may be a while til he gets rescued, too, and things can pile up.

STAY HOME, HUBBY!!!

Snow is starting to let up here in the East Central Texas Panhandle...

Visibility has improved somewhat, the clouds are thinning, letting in a bit more light.

The wind is still howling though, but seems to have let up a little from our 40mph sustained and 70 mph gusts...

Not even going to try the roads today, it will be awhile before the county gets out this far to plow trails through the drifts, so looks like we're snowed in for a bit...

I just checked the radar and it looks like you're almost out of the snow. The sun is trying to come out here, too. We live out in the middle of cotton fields, so the only snow that didn't blow away is in the drifts. We don't have the drifts like you do, either. Hopefully, the wind will come down and they can start plowing out here.

Just talked to family in Lamesa. The sun is out, but the wind is blowing. Lamesa and Wilson were the only school districts in the area to HAVE school today. Poor kids!

Re: Blizzard Warning, Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas...UPDATE: National Guard Called In To The Texas Panhandle
Well, this is the worst I've ever seen. They had really bad blizzards up here in 1957 and 1889, and according to the data, this is certainly comparable with that...

I'm not worried about me you understand, I'm fine. The Electricity is still working (knock on wood), house is warm, the temps outside aren't terrible until you factor in wind chill...

I worry more about my animals in things like this, the Livestock losses are going to be unbelievable up on the baldies (the flat country), and the feedlots will be dragging deads for weeks, luckily I have my cattle in a pasture here in Texas with good cover, and thank God for that, but they're going to need some hay in the next few days, and I suspect it's going to be awhile before I can even get down the road to them...skid loader will be useless in this deep snow, and my tractor is in New Mexico...

And this happened right in the dead middle of calving season up here...so I'm praying my babies will be okay. Them old cows are pretty savie though, and it's always surprising how good they come out of these things...
 Quoting: Saddletramp

Your post made me really sad Saddletramp. With the drought over the past few years, the price of hay (if you can find it), and now this...It's certainly going to take its toll on an industry that has already been hit really hard. I pray all the livestock makes it through this. (and the people too)
 Quoting: CowgirlK

We've got hay to burn here, but it's a bit of a long haul...

I remember one year that hay farmers in Washington and Idaho donated hay and trucking to get feed to the midwest, but that was when energy was affordable.
