I'd say the biggest and most annoying complication for the scientists and their investors for "hacking the planet" is figuring out how to explain to the unaware population how science got to be and is now so good at doing this that it will soon be as easy as managing your HVAC.

Why the f*ck do people have so much faith in their government to only do what's right? Why is it so far outside the realm of possibility that goverment has had this technology for years and has been manipulating the weather? Now they're coming right out and saying they have the ability to CORRECT global warming, but for f*ucksake, if they have the ability to "correct" it, doesn't that mean they have the power to just as easily create it!! Why do we assume they would never do anything to hurt us?

What are the underlying causes of extreme weather instability, which has ravaged every major region of the World in the course of the last few years?

Hurricanes and tropical storms have ravaged the Caribbean. Central Asia and the Middle East are afflicted by drought. West Africa is facing the biggest swarm of locusts in more than a decade. Four destructive hurricanes and a tropical rain storm Alex, Ivan, Frances, Charley and Jeanne have occurred in a sequence, within a short period of time. Unprecedented in hurricane history in the Caribbean, the island of Grenada was completely devastated: 37 people died and roughly two-thirds of the island's 100,000 inhabitants have been left homeless; in Haiti, more than two thousand people have died and tens of thousands are homeless. The Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Cuba, the Bahamas and Florida have also been devastated. In the US, the damage in several Southern states including Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and the Carolinas is the highest in US history.

A study released in July 2003, by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) places the blame, without further examination, at the feet of global warming:

"These record extreme events [high temperatures, low temperatures and high rainfall amounts and droughts] all go into calculating the monthly and annual averages which, for temperatures, have been gradually increasing over the past 100 years," the WMO said in its statement (CNN, July 3, 2003, [link to www.cnn.com] )

While global warming is undoubtedly an important factor, it does not fully account for these extreme and unusual weather patterns.

Weather Warfare

The significant expansion in America's weather warfare arsenal, which is a priority of the Department of Defense is not a matter for debate or discussion. While, environmentalists blame the Bush administration for not having signed the Kyoto protocol, the issue of "weather warfare", namely the manipulation of weather patterns for military use is never mentioned.

The US Air Force has the capability of manipulating climate either for testing purposes or for outright military-intelligence use. These capabilities extend to the triggering of floods, hurricanes, droughts and earthquakes. In recent years, large amounts of money have been allocated by the US Department of Defense to further developing and perfecting these capabilities.

Weather modification will become a part of domestic and international security and could be done unilaterally... It could have offensive and defensive applications and even be used for deterrence purposes. The ability to generate precipitation, fog, and storms on earth or to modify space weather, ... and the production of artificial weather all are a part of an integrated set of technologies which can provide substantial increase in US, or degraded capability in an adversary, to achieve global awareness, reach, and power. While there is no firm evidence that the US Air Force weather warfare facilities have been deliberately applied to modify weather patterns, one would expect that if these capabilities are being developed for military use, they would at least be the object of routine testing, much in the same way as the testing of new conventional and strategic weapons systems. <---how else would this "new" geoengineering strategy be so evolved that it "Soon, geo-engineers may be able to control the weather as effortlessly as you control your central air."

Owning the Weather tells the story of weather modification in the United States. As head of the Southwest Texas Weather Modification Association, Shearrer oversees the cloud seeding program, which attempts to artificially stimulate large-scale precipitation. Areas of weather modification include precipitation enhancement, hail suppression and fog dispersal. During filming, Shearrer was also serving a term as president of the national Weather Modification Association from 2006-2007.

Shearrer has lobbied in Washington, D.C. and traveled the world, sharing his knowledge with government leaders in Greece and India. In the summer of 2005, he appeared in an article and photo in The Hindu, the national newspaper of India."

A person of interest is sought in the shooting death of former Atascosa County Commissioner Tommy Shearrer (pictured above), Atascosa County sheriff's deputies said.

Sheriff's investigators said Shearrer, 54, was found shot to death in his pickup truck Wednesday morning on Farm Road 3006 near Saint Augustine."

The Atascosa County Sheriff's Office confirmed the body of 19-year-old Manuel De Los Reyes Galeas was spotted in a creek bed Friday afternoon by a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter crew who were conducting another search of the area where Shearrer's body was found.

It's believed Galeas died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officials said a pistol that belongs to one of his family members was found near his body.

5. Enhanced weathering
Weathering, or the process of wearing down mountains and Earth with wind and rain, is another one of the planet's natural filtration systems. As rocks and pebbles are broken down by weather, they pull carbon out of the atmosphere via a complex chemical process. Then they are washed into the sea, where they fall to the seafloor with their carbon load. Your carbon is now at the bottom of the ocean, where it stays for millions of years. Some geoengineers propose speeding this process up, by spreading pre-weathered rocks out in various locations. Instead of weathering processes that take millions of years, this "enhanced" process could pull carbon out of the air very quickly. If we did this while making the clouds more reflective, we could eventually pull enough carbon out of the air that we could stop messing around with the clouds — we'd have reduced the carbon load enough that more light wouldn't mean an instant greenhouse.

Some people commenting on the Hacking the Planet FB page (and some of the personal pages of my fellow hosts Cara Santa Maria and Brian Malow) seem to be confused that we are *advocating* the idea of modifying the weather. Some of them even seem to be quite angry on the subject, especially because they are connecting our show's content with what they believe are conspiracies by the government or others to manipulate the weather or spray things on the public today.

With all respect, I think they are misperceiving the show's message. We're not flatly advocating that big manipulations of the environment. That's why we spend time in each episode discussing the consequences of such attempts, and warn what the unintended consequences might be. In some cases, these hacks of the environment might be worthwhile because they could save lives; in other cases, they may not be worth the risk. We're informing people so that they can make up their own minds.
