WTF? Yahoo! tells employees to stop working from home
Working virtual is pretty huge. I know some people who do it and they absolutely love it

"...In a memo sent out Friday by Yahoo!, the tech giant announced that all employees who work remotely have to start coming into the office by June, AllThingsDigital reports.

“We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together,” the memo reads. “Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home.”

That is unusual. :| I have some coworkers who work from home and it works out great for them because they have small children to look after. Plus it saves on gas, obviously.

I couldn't work from home no way. I need to be around people. Plus I would never wear pants or shave again and probably smoke a lot more.

Yeah, but if you could mix it up like have 2 days at home, you'd prob never want to go back to 5 days a week

I actually do 4 10s instead of 5 days and I'm totally cool with it. :)

Sorry. But working from home does decrease productivity unless strict rules and guidelines are upheld and met. That being said, there could be other reasons behind this move also, like decreasing the work force.

Not in my case.

I write software and am easily twice as productive from home.

Yeah.

I am surprised a tech company thinks it can get away with this. I don't think this is the norm in the industry, and they could lose some valuable employees if they aren't careful.

Maybe so, i am not saying there aren't people that work well at home, and motivate themselves. It's like everything else, there are people that abuse the system and ruin it for everyone else. And instead of punishing the abusers they go after everyone, SUCKS!

Re: WTF? Yahoo! tells employees to stop working from home
I guess it is possible they could be trying to get rid of some people. Not likely that is the main reason, tho. Gotta be easier ways.

You know what I think it is? They are worried about lack of "knowledge-transfer". Maybe they fear they will lose people who have most of the knowledge, or are planning to target them later on (i.e., the older, more expensive workers)

Re: WTF? Yahoo! tells employees to stop working from home
I've worked from home for sixteen years. I started out two days at home and three days in the office. I now only commute in one day a week and even that is unnecessary. I save fifteen hours in commuting time and at least $120 a week in gas. I love it of course and I am extremely organized and productive. I do accounting and it's ideal for working from home. I can't imagine being made to go into the office daily at wonder if this new yahoo policy will stick or not. Sad for those employees impacted.

Re: WTF? Yahoo! tells employees to stop working from home
So?

Most of the people getting that privilege are the "moms" who see an excuse to work at home, or idiots who bought a house way, far away and now beg for consideration.

Usually has nothing to do with work. Fuck em.
