It imposed punishing, harsh conditions on Germany to ensure that it would never again rise to another position where it could wage war on Europe and the rest of the world. Germany had to take full responsibility for the war, pay reparations of $32 billion in war damages, as well as surrender all its territories. Post-war Germany was humiliated, depressed, angry and weak. After the war, the Weimar Republic, a parliamentary democracy, ruled Germany. The Nazi rise to power ended the Republic when Adolf Hitler took over as chancellor on January 30, 1933 and installed the Nazi state, aka the Third Reich.
