The cost to go to school is making it harder to justify so it depends on what you want to do when you are done. It's not for everyone but chances are you will get a better job with a degree than without one.

Well, I don have a degree. I'm burned out from my twenty-something "career". Honestly, I'm thinking of becoming a school bus driver. Wouldn't that be a noble thing? Providing a needed service for my local community. Does that make me less of a person socially?

It does matter. My annual pay incrases have been bigger since I've gone back to school.

If you can't go to school on grants & on scholarships or your own money, then you can't afford to go to school.

Taking out loans to go to school in this economy is ludicrous. There is no guarantee of a job in this economy once they graduate.

I pop many people's balloons at the local college campus when they talk about earning capacity once they get done. I make them do a reality check.

No they don't matter. Especially if it a bullshit field like art history, sociology, anthropology, black/Hispanic/gay/women's studies, or journalism.

depends on which degree you get. some pay awesome and are actually worth something, others are garbage. learning shit and getting an education is never a bad thing. people are being silly nowadays telling you learning isnt important and doesnt matter. bullshit i say.

Yes, they matter very much. I worked very hard at learning how to use my talents, but without a college degree it doesn't matter.

they work for some but retail is loading up with degreed folks who can't find jobs in their fields. whatever u do, don't take out college loans....

That's the whole point. Most people borrow the money thinking it will pay them back ten fold and it's just not the case.

I'm not saying that it doesn't get you more $$$. I'm just saying that it has been a complete scam onto the people. Because most benefit very little, if at all.

It's a BUSINESS. Simple as that.

And yes employers will go after grads before others, simply because that is what they have been dictated to do to perpetuate the massive amounts of $$$ being spent in colleges.

There are so many college graduates that get out of school and go to their new careers and find out that what they learned in college has nothing to do with their daily job requirements in the field.

i received a sociology degree and it is worthless. don't do stuff like that. scientific degrees are helpful, liberal arts are not.

Ha ha someone calls my house non stop from Sallie Mae student loans looking for Catherine Norman. Glad Uncle Sam paid for my book learning in exchange for being a pawn for a few years. Not a bad trade. No one is calling the house for me. Looks like school loans suck, and what a racket. You take out the loan to get the better paying job, and then there is really no guarantee you will get the batter paying job, but you still gotta pay off the loan. I know a few folks with pretty high speed degrees that are working at wal-mart and delivering pizzas. And no OP, I don't think a degree makes much difference. Some of the most educated people I know (degree wise and on paper) are some of the most lackluster folks you'll ever meet. Learn how to so something you like doing, and you'll be alright OP.

Honestly best way to find out if a degree is worth it is to check around at the jobs you'd like to work and maybe ask what kind of education they are expecting to see. The results might surprise you.

How would you recommend paying for college if you're in your 30s and broke? If you can't get a grant or something, is it even doable? Realistically?

In today's economy, it only makes sense if you choose your degree wisely. Don't choose something that won't get you a job. Pick a degree that is paying big. Seriously.

Try a community college. Fairly cheap. I went to one, then transferred to a state college. Worked at one of the biggest multinational corporations for many years and did quite well. Until you realize what a bunch of psychopaths corporations breed. Meh, the rat race. Just have to be a bit of a psychopath yourself to do well in that environment.
