Re: Potential Epic Comet Collision with Mars in 2014 *UPDATE: VIDEO ON FIRST POST*
...

As I showed in my video, that is unknown at this time, if it hits (unlikely, but possible) it could hit either side of the planet.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

with the direction it's coming from, it can only and
solely hit the far side of Mars (from earth's view), dumb ass.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1545225

Watch the video, it can hit either side.

 Quoting: Dr. Astro

What are the possible scenarios if the comet has a very close flyby that alters the course of the its orbit to either impact mars of another planets. maybe even earth.

for example passes very close causing a serious deviation in orbit sending it to the inner solar system>?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2310364

interesting point. yes. there is some scenario where the
Comet can get so close to Mars that it is pulled into
a partial "orbital state", and ends up getting sling-shotted 90 degrees in a new direction.

Mars doesn't have enough gravity to do that. Even at extremely close approaches the comet's orbit is not significantly impacted, its simply traveling far too fast. To put this into some perspective, at the surface of Mars escape velocity is 5 km/sec. This comet will be traveling at about 11 times that velocity relative to Mars. If you disagree, then by all means post the orbital elements or state vectors that show this "scenario" occurring consistent with the astrometric data of the comet.

Not unless earth decides to change directions in its orbit. Some ejecta might eventually reach us if it happens, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

As the Doctor pointed out, the planets travel around the Sun in a counter-clockwise direction, meaning that Earth will actually be travelling AWAY from the point of impact at a speed of about 108,000 kph. Also, debris from any impact in the Martian orbit will have to travel about 54,600,000 km to reach Earths orbit.

No, I don't know that. At the very least, a comet is going to pass by Mars at such a close distance that Mars will be within the coma and micrometeoroids from the comet may even damage our probes. A direct impact between mars and the comet is unlikely, but it is possible. No one knows for sure whether it will happen or not. Why is it that so many GLP'ers hate not having an answer? It seems like everything has to have an answer one way or another, even if it's a wacky one. The truth is sometimes we just don't have the answer and this is one of those times. We will have the answer, and probably soon, but we don't just yet.

I realize that as of now it is impossible to accurately predict a hit or miss on Mars. How long before the event can it be said with certainty (99% or greater) that it will or will not hit?
Thanks.

Hard to say, they just found some pre-discovery images of it from Pan-STARRS that gives us a much longer observation arc, but we still can't rule out the possibility. It may be weeks before we know for sure.

a question related to comets...
Is it normal to have so many visible comets in one year..(4 comets this year) and if not, why is there more traffic now?

Sometimes we get no good comets in a year, sometimes we get multiple, it just depends. It's been a few years since we've had a good comet, so we're overdue. In 2002 we had a few awesome comets, including C/2002 T7 LINEAR, C/2002 V1 NEAT (though those two didn't start to put on their best shows until 2003), comet Ikeya-Zhang, and comet Kudo-Fujikawa which was also at around magnitude 6 late that year. This year Pan-STARRS, ISON, and Lemmon will be our best bets for good comets.
