Back in the days of Shoemaker the word was that collisions like this were so rare it would need to be a very arrogant person to claim he will see one during his lifetime. Then Shoemaker impact occurred. Combine the odds for a scientist of this era to see 2 collisions of this kind!
Another important aspect is that Mars have been hit in the past (?) and probably lost his habitable environment because of it so for the planet to be in dangerous path is not a surprise.
Having 2 major planets of the sol system suffering a huge impact within 30 years (which is really nothing in astrophysics) tells something about our system being so vulnerable it is only a matter of time (not so much) for Earth to be next. Perhaps the whole system is in a dangerous space area and that explains the coincidence of so many rare events occurring in such a short time frame.

Large comet to ram into Mars in 2014

Astronomers predict a large-scale disaster on the Red Planet in October 2014, when a comet may ram into Mars, creating a 500-kilometer crater, the website of the Russian observatory ISON-NM said.

According to scientists, a catastrophe of global scale may occur on Mars. The trajectory of comet C/2013 A1, which Australian astronomers discovered in early 2013, will supposedly intersect with Mars. If it happens, the impact will produce an explosion, the power of which will be equivalent to 20 billion megatons of TNT.

The forecast is based on current measurements and will be updated as new data arrive. It was said that the comet was moving in the direction opposite to the planets of the solar system. Therefore, the speed in the possible impact will be very high - about 56 kilometers per second. The core of the comet is 50 kilometers large. A crater with the diameter of 500 kilometers may thus be formed on the crash site.

 Quoting: Dr. Astro

How big is it? will it melt off the surface and recause a "Iron Catastrophy" then restart the magnetosphere in time making mars once again habital?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 35131605

Not THAT big. Hard to say exactly this early on, but we're talking about something potentially as much as 2 orders of magnitude more powerful than the chicxulub event.
 Quoting: Dr. Astro

2 orders of magnitude !! really !!

That event wiped off life on earth !!!! well at least the dinos!

Actually, a giant comet disintegrated 18,000 years ago and caused the great ice age. the remnants of it are still floating around us and cause the seasonal meteor showers and periodic bigger impcts. Bigger chunks of it have struck the earth and are associated with the sumerian collapse (2200 BC) and the collapse of the roman empire (500 AD). Since the renaissance, five strikes have occured and have coincided with wars and upheaveal. These strikes seem to occur between every 100-200 years. Perhaps we are now in a period of increased fireballs.

the above info according to a scientist who wrote a report for oxford university. His last name is Clube, and the report is named something like Periodic Hazard of Fireballs.

Hi Dr. Astro

I'd like to know what possible object could be this in the following video according to your knowledge. It's a long video but very quickly you can look several pictures and videos from the Volcan Turrialba, which makes me wondering about it.

I've been trying to do my little research a couple astronomical software but it doesn't seem any known planet or moon.

Here the video:

Re: Potential Epic Comet Collision with Mars in 2014 *UPDATE: VIDEO ON FIRST POST*
I'm working on my own analysis of the comet's orbit and the potential risk right now, but in the meantime since word is starting to get around about this I wanted to go ahead and make the thread to put this out there. Hat tip to Dr. Ian Musgrave:
[link to astroblogger.blogspot.com]
Now, it's important to point out that we don't know the orbit well enough yet to know if it will hit or not. It could make a very close pass to Mars, or it could collide. We just don't know yet. I'm currently running my own analysis to try to determine the level of risk. If it hits though (which would be on October 19th, 2014), the impact will be tremendous. This comet is on a retrograde orbit, traveling the opposite direction of the planets, so a head-on collision would be in excess of 50 km/sec. That's very, very high. Minimum distance of the approach is currently sitting at 0 on JPL's site, maximum distance is at 0.00794 AU.

It would be a very, very bad day to be a martian if this thing hits.
