Confession with a priest is simply a means to give up your sins to God. The priest acts as a conduit in order to facilitate this transfer, and relieve you of the burden that you carry with you. This is not to say that you cannot ask God for forgiveness on your own, through the solitude of prayer, but confessing them to a priest is helpful.


NO! Confession is probably the best form of social control ever invented. Every priest gets to learn all the communities' secrets. That leaves the door open for extortion at the lowest level all the way to rape and sodomy of children.

I looked over the thread you posted and I agree -- I think that the Church is not as closed and exclusive as it once was, Vatican II changed a lot of that. I do believe Vatican II was necessary; what I rebel against are that many of the reforms were taken too far. That is one thing I feel called to address.

I actually have not heard that definition before, but I am quite honored to be viewed in that fashion. :-)

Excellent! I was also away from the Church for a time, due to theological differences, but once I made my way back I knew she was always there, waiting for me. I have felt since I was a small child that this is what I am supposed to do, and -- if God wills -- it will happen.

That is a great assumption on your part, because it goes against the Catholic vow of silence that all priests practice, and it ignores the fact that there is no evidence of rampant extortion of parishioners in the Catholic Church using their confessions as blackmail.

I had my theological differences too, and followed the well-trodden path towards enlightenment, gnosticism, etc.

Needless to say, it is a path that goes nowhere except round and round in the circles they so love. I am amazed at the changes being brought about in me, since my return,
the state of consciousness I wanted for so long to acquire from within me, is now bestowed upon me from above.
The sacraments really are food and medicine for the soul!

The fact that men continue to be called to be priests and respond from their hearts and minds is not only incredible from the world's view, but are a sure sign of God's presence on the Earth, in these days of so much darkness and estrangement from God.

It's less of a problem that he is gay and more the fact that he was sexually harassing people. Gay or not, they are not supposed to be having sex with ANYBODY. Just like they are supposed to have taken vows of poverty but live in golden palaces. The Vatican is not needed for people to love God or Jesus.

And this debate could go on forever! For me, I bid you good luck with whatever path you choose and what you believe in! Maybe if you really studied scripture and not memorized verses with a shallow understanding, and ask for the blind hatred in your heart to be taken away, you would realize how rediculous your statement really is.

A majority of Cathoic priests do not take a vow of poverty. Only certain orders (like Dominicans), but certainly not diocesean priests (which is what most people think of when they think of a Catholic priest).

The amount of misinformation that many take for face value just to hold onto their hatred in their hardened hearts is amazing... but not surprising. That is why you are here on earth, to have the heardened heart fixed, and where you hold your hatred is actually the key to helping you overcome it.
