Copper sewage pipes in the basement may have corrosion holes in them on top OR the toilet wax seal is shot.
Quoting: anonymous coward 30074925 Pay no attention to this^^^^^idiot, sewage pipes are either iron or PVC plastic, and if your wax seal is leaking, there would be toilet water on your floor, the problem is with the vent system, it could be that one of your upstairs neighbors flushed something large down the shitter to block the ventilation, since you live in a multi-floor building, anything can happen...  They do make copper dwv pipe. It's expensive as all hell, but it's not uncommon, especially in high rises and such. Cast iron is far more likely, but copper dwv is around.
