doesnt fusion take place in a neutron generator?

Yep, it only takes about 100KeV or so to make fusion happen on a table top scale. That device is extremely slick and cool, and must incorporate some shielding.

The neutron source in my lab, is about 50 years old and consists of Pu and Be in an alloy, the Pu produces alphas that interact with the Be to produce neutrons.
