But as far as the 'how we hear the story.' I'm not so sure that it's an all or nothing game. I think that anything that brings people closer to Christ is a good thing. Yes, there is a lot of misinformation, and a lot of false preaching out there, as well as flawed doctrine. However, once you let Christ get his hands on you - if you truly let him into your life, he will steere you in the right direction. And a lot of times it's through baby steps. Or two steps forward, one back. Or one forward, two back.

God can turn any circumstance into a positive, and use anything for good. Whatever the motive behind this series, I have faith in God that it can be used to work miracles in peoples' lives. ;)

I will not be watching it. From what little previews I viewed, it clashed with my spirit.

Why I am not watching History Channel's "The Bible"

First, before watching, reading, attending, or in any way absorbing anything related to the bible, it is wise to look into the background of the people who prepared the material. In our day we have the internet to look into the doctrines of the people bringing us their message.

Even in the first generation church, they have heard things about certain men who bring false doctrines and evil words. (Acts 9:13, Acts 15:24). So because we have the opportunity to be Bereans ahead of time, we are.

The people putting together this production adhere to false doctrines and do not know the truth. As Erin Benziger wrote on her blog,

"Not only, then, were seeker-driven and Word Faith pastors such as Warren, Osteen and Jakes consulted, but others of questionable convictions like Erwin McManus, Craig Groeschel, Gabe Lyons, Samuel Rodriguez and others. Time and space prevent from examining here each of these names in depth.

Roma Downey, wife of producer Mark Burnett, plays Mary in the mini-series, and was best known as the kind hearted angel on the long-running television program "Touched by an Angel." However, Downey's spiritual journey has taken a turn toward darkness. She openly embraces New Age and Mysticism.

p.s. However, I am interested in watching "The Vikings".

Thanks for sharing this. I was on board with it because I saw that they were being interviewed on EWTN, and figured it was 'safe' from a Catholic perspective. Started watching the recording last night, but with my young daughter who couldn't sleep and when we got to the part where Sarah was urging Abraham to produce a child with Hagar, I decided it was time to turn it off and pre-screen before showing it to the kids.
 Quoting: dglnomore

Sarah did urge Abraham to have a child with Hagar. That is scriptural

Oh, I know that. I just didn't want my 8 year-old being exposed to that at bed time, and I didn't know where it was going, if you know what I mean.

If you really want truth and light, then it is found in the Bible. Whether you want to believe that or not, it is the truth.

ALL the stuff on this site is centered around trying to know the unknown.

But the Bible is the only place that God speaks in our modern world.

It's pretty sad to read everything on here about the illuminati, et al. To truly understand what is coming on the world you'd have to know God's truth first. Among many many other truths in the Bible, it also contains the truth of the last days.

And that truth is that Jesus will return. But it will be the OTHER Jesus Paul told us about. The OTHER Jesus has already arrived on the scene of the false churches and the liars -- wolves in sheeps clothing. The OTHER Jesus is the one that tells you that you're really a good person, and God REALLY REALLY NEEDS you.

But guess what -- God is God -- all powerful, all mighty. God doesn't NEED you. YOU NEED HIM.

And this OTHER Jesus will be the one that all of the deniers here will open their eyes to and finally admit there is a god. Only it won't be the God of Abraham, Isaac and Joseph. It will be the god of this world.

"In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them." ~ 2 Corinthians 4:4 KJV

There is another god in this world who is the king of lies and disinformation. He has been telling the same lie since the beginning.

And for all of you people who hate on God because he WILL judge people in the end, think on this for a minute.

If heaven IS real -- and there IS a God and he does not judge the wicked -- if there is even a tiny amount of evil in God -- why would we even want to go to heaven. It will end up being the same hell we have here on earth. God MUST judge evil if we are to be promised eternal happiness while the evil is locked without. Jesus warned of the yeast of the Pharises -- a little tiny amount of yeast mixes into the whole lot of dough and continues to grow. Evil is the same way. If there is any evil at all in a perfect God -- then Heaven will not be a place of eternal rest.

God must judge the wicked.

So, back to my original point.

The Bible series is beginning to prepare people's minds for the idea of miracles again. Satan will have power in the end to perform miracles. The people will be so wowed, that they will naturally think that this MUST be God. They will be fooled. They will be following the false god.

The best counterfeit is the one that looks most similar to the real thing.

"And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness." ~ 2 Thess 2:10-12

I personally don't believe in aliens. And I'm sure a lot of you would tell me that just because I don't believe in them doesn't mean they don't exist.

Well, just because you don't believe in God doesn't mean He's not there.

Believe the truth before your only option left is the lie.

You'll have to help me out.

I don't recall Paul every writing about "the OTHER Jesus." I do remember his writing about another Gospel, but the "other" Jesus.

So, I have to put the rest of what you wrote on hold until you can help me out.

Re: Ok, what's goin' on? The History Channel (known for blasphemy and illuminati affiliation) brings us a 10hr miniseries of The Bible on 3/3/13
I am glad that History Channel is showing it. Here are my thoughts.

I do think the parts they showed were pretty accurate, no blatant errors, just a lot of omissions. I realize that they could only fit so much of the Bible in a 10 hour series.

IMO the omissions, however, portrayed God as only angry/just, without showing his sustaining/compassionate acts:

- God's explanation of what would happen if Adam/Eve ate the forbidden fruit, showed a snake but didn't really explain who was tempting them
- the dove/olive leaf
- promise of the rainbow
- story of Jacob, trust and persistence, building of a nation (fulfilled the promise to Isaac)
- story of Joseph/Egypt, redemption, protection leading to providing for his people in a famine (God working out bad things for good)
- Moses was portrayed as a crazy loner, when in fact he was married, had a son and tended sheep.
- conversation between Moses and God at the burning bush shows God's compassion and direction for Moses. He told Moses exactly what to do and what would take place.
- the plagues were glossed over, and seemed too focused on Moses/Pharoh when everything Moses did was pointing to God's power and desire for the people to be free (10 Commandments were much closer to showing this). Moses continually pointed to God as being the source of everything that was happening.
- God's leading them from Egypt with by the cloud and fire.
- God's providing of manna to them in the wilderness/water from the rock.
- the giving of the 10 commandments was much more of an event than portrayed; the whole giving of the law was very detailed and covered in several chapters in Exodus.

The movie makes everyone kind of doings rather willy-nilly than being led by God and told by God exactly what to do, what not to do, laws to follow, where to go, etc.

Hopefully, though, this movie will make people want to read the Bible.

Let me expand that to include the verse before -- it helps to prove my point that Satan has been telling the same lie from the beginning.

3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

Christ is simple, the truth is simple -- it's the lies that get confusing.

Do you think Paul thought that there would be another "physical" Jesus as you wrote above, or do you think Paul was saying that there would be those coming after him who would distort Jesus' real message?

I happen to believe the latter.

Re: Ok, what's goin' on? The History Channel (known for blasphemy and illuminati affiliation) brings us a 10hr miniseries of The Bible on 3/3/13
That's a great question. And very insightful.

I think that he was perhaps referring to both.

I used to think it was the latter -- just the perversion of the gospel.

However, with reading more and observing what is going on in the world around us, I've come to think the former, that he is speaking of a literal Jesus.

Since he goes on to specify another gospel and another spirit, I don't think he's being redundant. I think he's laying out the fact that there will be a complete other counterfeit religion. It will mirror the truth so closely that it will almost be undiscernible -- except to those who know God and the truth of his Word.

Here is another verse that I think can help to back this up (as the Bible says -- two witnesses are necessary)

"For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. ~Matthew 24:21-26 KJV

I just want to say, even if you disagree with me, thank you for speaking civilly and in an intelligent manner. That's a rare find in today's world!

I watched last night. I must note that I began viewing with one hand firmly planted on my rear back pant pocket. Anything even remotely affiliated with Jolly Joel Osteen mandates I be aware of the location of my wallet. Similar to a three card monte dealer or shell game barker, Osteen (in my estimation) loves those dollars.

When the series neglected to reenact, or show, the golden calf created in the desert while Moses retreived the Ten Commandments, I wrote it off to the Producers finding the similarities too close to home. The Word of God versus the false idol of gold (and speaking of gold/dollars, the commercials for Christain Mingle Dating Service simply said, "Ka-Ching, Dolla', Dolla, Bill, Baby")

I'm going to pass on further viewing. Thankfully, I read the book.

Wathed it. I am very leery of anythiing the History Channel does regarding the Bible because they often misrepresent and even flat out lie where Biblical matters are concerned. Having read the Bible several times two things occured to me.

1. Now I know why my wife gets so bent out of shape when a cool movie comes out and she is pissed that it isn't exactly word for word like the book she loved.

2. As many times as I have read the Bible and pride myself on knowing it, I found myself going back to look up this or that thing that looked out of place. There wasn't anything in this episode that was destructive to the integrity of the Bible. Just the normal poetic license any movie takes. BUT, If I have to look it up, the movie makers have done their job because they wanted people to know about the Bible and I went back to read it again just to double check.

Thank you! I don't know why a lot of others find it difficult to do so, but yes, it is rare these days. (See my tag line).

It's not that I disagree with you; it's that in the beginning I didn't understand you. You cleared that up, and I appreciate it.

In my travels and duties I have visited over a hundred churches, mostly in the past. I have seen a lot of imbalance in teaching though never outright perversion. (I ignore everything I see on TV.) There is also a lot of "the ends justify the means" type preaching. In other places there is a lot of "intellectual assent" but not much courage in living a life responsive to that assent.

When anyone tells a story, they tell it for a reason. That's true whether it's preaching in church or a TV production. Nothing wrong with that, in fact, it's impossible to avoid doing so.

When anyone hears a story, it is heard in the context of their own past experiences.

The value of a good story is that it draws something out of us that maybe has not been drawn out before. Even Scripture can be very valuable in doing that if we will let it.

My theory:

They will do a classical, outdated take on everything. They will show Noah bringing in thousands of animals on to a boat that couldn't possibly sustain them, they will show the parting of the Red Sea based on Moses's command...

These sort of things.

Most people have been conditioned to scoff at these things, so this new documentary will simply reinforce this attitude, rather than really bring anyone to any understanding or new revelation.

It's a wash and they'll sell ads.

Thank you I hadn't read this. An excerpt...

Burnett and Downey gathered some 40 religious leaders, academics and theologians of all denominations as consultants. They used an amalgam of biblical translations, yet worked from the premise that the Bible is, in their words, "the absolute truth." Alerting viewers that it's a drama taking poetic license, the miniseries carries a note in front of every installment: "This program is an adaptation of Bible stories that changed our world. It endeavors to stay true to the spirit of the book."

And...

They considered taking a "YouTube-ish" approach, Burnett said, by stuffing in as many stories as possible in abbreviated form. But they ultimately decided to choose fewer stories and characters — among them Noah's ark, Abraham and Isaac, Daniel and the lions' den, the Exodus, the birth of Jesus — for a deeper dive.
