CNN just reported on this for the first time a few minutes ago. Chad Myers was talking about it live on air.

that's gonna split Mars into pieces, and most
of them will then come hurtling towards the Earth, and smash us all to smithereens!!!

ahhh
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1545225

Fortunately its not going to split Mars, but it will make a massive explosion and a big molten crater, and will send a bunch of ejecta into space. That means we would likely see a large increase in meteors here on Earth for a while.

Re: BREAKING NEWS --- Mars to be hit by massive comet! 40 billion nuke bomb size explosion! CONFIRMED!
I don't think you understand how big 1.9 billion Castle Bravo's is. That number is exceedingly exaggerated to absolutely insane levels.

BS on this.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 29348827

30 miles diameter comet @ 1000kg/m^3 density @ 56 km/s impact velocity
= 9.24 x 1025 Joules released
= 2.21 x 1010 MegaTons TNT
= 22,100,000,000 Megatons of TNT equiv energy

or, the energy equiv of 1.9 billion Castle Bravo explosions (15 Mt)

watch in 1080HD and full screen with sound on:

[link to www.youtube.com]

Imagining 1.9 billion times that power in an impact event takes a lot of good imagination.
 Quoting: Dr. Ho Doan 34464973

sorry, that should be
' = 2.21 x 10^10 MegaTons TNT '
 Quoting: Dr. Ho Doan 34464973

Wow I am sleepy this morning!

corrections:

30 miles diameter comet @ 1000kg/m^3 density @ 56 km/s impact velocity
= 9.24 x 10^25 Joules released
= 2.21 x 10^10 MegaTons TNT
= 22,100,000,000 Megatons of TNT equiv energy

and would be the equiv of about 1.5 billion Castle bravo explosions...

I calculated the above using the parameters listed above.

The 1.3 billion Castle Bravos number used earlier came from the 20 billion megaton total earlier calculated by others that I used.

Its all guesses and will vary some depending on the actual size and density, but it all says in the same ballpark.
 Quoting: Dr. Ho Doan 34464973

Even if we go very conservative and put this at 20 miles diameter(instead of 30) and reduce the density to 600 kg/m3(instead of 1,000), we still get

= 1.64 x 10^25 Joules
= 3.92 x 10^9 Megatons TNT
= 3,920,000,000 Megatons of TNT
[link to impact.ese.ic.ac.uk]

So a very conservative estimate would put it at about 4 billion Megatons of TNT, or 266 million times the energy of the Castle Bravo explosion shown here.

The current estimates of the impact with comet - Mars put it at roughly 2 x 10^25 Joules.
The Chicxulub impact that killed off the dinosaurs was estimated at 4.2 x 10^23 Joules.

So this impact would be roughly 50 times the energy of the dinosaur killer.

Or maybe a bomb that more people have knowledge of, the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, a 'mere' 16 kilotons in yield. Most believe well over a hundred thousand people were killed, many within seconds.

So the energy of this comet impact of 4 billion megatons of TNT, would be 250 billion times the yield of the bomb that brought a tragic end to WW2.

Re: BREAKING NEWS --- Mars to be hit by massive comet! 40 billion nuke bomb size explosion! CONFIRMED!
The core of the comet will be moving 56 kilometers per sec when it smashes into Mars. The explosion it creates will be equal to 40 BILLION 500kt nuclear bombs(avg US and Russ arsenal weapon) going off at once, or 20 billion megatons of TNT, or 1.33 trillion Hiroshima bombs, or 1.3 billion Castle Bravo explosions. Its enough to kill all life on the planet if any were living there.

Astronomers predict a large-scale disaster on the Red Planet in October 2014, when a comet may ram into Mars, creating a 500-kilometer crater, the website of the Russian observatory ISON-NM said.
[link to english.pravda.ru]

comet core 30 miles across
collision speed 35 miles per second (126,000 miles per hour)

It may make Mars temporarily as bright as the sun. The crater left behind will be 500 kilometers across. A lot of rock will be ejected into space and become stray asteroids. This will be an epic event.

You can bet every penny that everyone in the space industry will be studying this comet to find the true trajectory - and just as SL-9, all eyes will be on it.
I really really hope it hits. It will be amazing to see.
 Quoting: Anonymous 843492

Even better when another comet - there's a lot out there, you know - hits us. Maybe this Mars impact news for Oct 2014 may be a distraction for comet ISON due this November - we go through its tail in January 2014. This is no squirt like Elenin, a runt of a comet. It's a whopper.

It would seem that a focused impact with that much explosive force could be enough to alter the Mars orbit. At which time the question them becomes; How long until Mars impacts Earth?

It isn't you, old chap, that gets me. It's the worship of you by others. As you have already indicated, what you know and others know about this comet is constantly changing and a completely picture may eventually emerge. Why, McCanney may be right when comet ISON flies by Mars and something - we really don't know - might happen to Mars orbit or its position ; if either change, then the impact may not happen or, on the contrary, be a direct hit.
In addition, most of these long-term comets are recent discoveries and 'recent' isn't very comforting, is it! Which means what ELSE might soon be discovered?
I have not gone on your thread and am not disputing anything you have said. My quote was aimed at the comment praising you.

hey, AstroMut. why don't you use your considerable
resources to hunt down which super-computer they are
using to calculate the precise trajectory of this thing,
thus enabling us to precisely tell whether or not this
thing will hit Mars and precisely what day and time it
will happen? 'kay?

Throwing a bigger computer at the problem won't solve it. The problem is that we lack sufficient astrometric data to know for sure if it will hit or not. Probably not, but we don't know.

no, no, no. they've been collecting the data-points for
the position of this thing in 3-dimensional space since
january. and with all the data points they can compute
the orbit (trajectory), and then, further calculate whether
the two objects will coincide in time and space on Oct 17, 2014.

and my guess is that only a super-computer can digest
all of the combinations and permutations therewith, so to speak.

No, that's not how it works. We don't have enough astrometric data to know one way or the other yet. Sorry.
