Hey Dr. Astro, much love and respect to you. But are you kidding me, an unprecedented meteor strike on Russia that injured thousands (never recorded in human hisotry), and now, NOW, just MAYBE, a planet destroying asteroid (which happens every once tens of millions of years) on our nearest neighbor (ok Venus is probably closer, but who cares)???

Again, if it weren't for science you wouldn't even know this comet was out there. Think about that for a minute. Supposing it hits Mars, would you rather it hit mars when no one was watching because no one was doing the science necessary to know it would happen?

Point is, scientists don't claim to have all the answers, but they do make discoveries and work to understand the cosmos better. Hey Astro, have you calculated the rough time it will take for the light to be visible? If it did hit, could we theoretically watch the whole thing go down on a really sweet telescope? That's be so cool to see.

I guess you simple answer will be "Yes, if you have a view of Mars when it hits."

it's a philosphical question: Can science answer everything,,,,, and if it cant is faith in God the answer. Both sides need to give respect to each sides of this dilemma...

It won't "blow up" Mars. Mars has taken bigger hits in its history. It is an exceedingly rare event, IF it happens. That said, for every comet that big that hits Mars, hundreds or perhaps thousands will miss it over the course of millions of years by the same distance as its current nominal orbit pass distance would take it. Same goes for earth, as a matter of fact...

It will be visible in telescopes if you're in the right spot on earth. The light from the collision will have taken roughly 13 minutes to reach you if I recall correctly.

Ha ha, bit of hyperbole on my part, probably won't blow up Mars. But will be quite the SHOW at the very least, if it hits, or not. Who knows right now.

Hey, personally, find it very interesting, like we live in a very interesting times right now, with unprecedented hits on Earth (Russia), and now, maybe on Mars in 2014. Just something to keep an eye on, sure you would agree Dr. Astro.

I should further qualify that statement: Mars will be visible in telescopes at the moment of impact if you're standing in the right place on earth, but whether you can actually see the impact or not would depend on where it hits mars. I'm working on figuring out the possibilities regarding that right now.

Science can explain both possibilities of the events in Russia,,, it is certainly scientifically possible that the impact in Russia was BOTH related and not related to the predicted steroid. There is no other alternative...

Great Astro. You could probably garner some temporary Internet fame if you were to figure out the EXACT specifics of where you would have to be and when to see it (of course only if there was a point and it was even visible when it hits Mars).

Not only that, if you were to work out a reasonably budget/affordable Telescope/computer program set-up that a lot of us could save and work towards as a personal (little less) Two-year goal.

It'd actually inspire me to figure out some awesome new way to make money if I knew I could witness an event like this.

Start off with something simple, learn how to find, focus on, and follow the moon. Get Stellarium and find where Mars will be in the sky from your location. Practice finding bright stars and planets, even if Mars isn't up. Planets (out to Saturn) are the easiest when you're just starting out because it's unmistakeable when you've found it properly.
