Unless someone knows the comets exact trajectory, the chances of it hitting are incredibly low.

I calculated the above using the parameters listed above.

The 1.3 billion Castle Bravos number used earlier came from the 20 billion megaton total earlier calculated by others that I used.


Its all guesses and will vary some depending on the actual size and density, but it all says in the same ballpark.

Just checked, the Shoemaker-Levy comet that hit Jupiter was discovered in March 1993, and was shortly thereafter projected to hit the planet in July 1994. 16 months later, which it did.

This comet just recently discovered has been projected to hit Mars in October 2014, 19 months from now.

I remember the run up to that Jupiter impact, it was highly anticipated and went on for that whole 16 months.

They were right back then.

They might be right again.

And this time the implications could be catasrophic for all humanity, when the inevitable debris from Earth's closest neighbor makes it's way towards Earth.

And there's nothing anyone can do to stop it!

Jupiter's a much bigger target though, and it tend to pull these things in with it's huge gravity.

There will be much more from the space in the following years or days.

Fortunately its not going to split Mars, but it will make a massive explosion and a big molten crater, and will send a bunch of ejecta into space. That means we would likely see a large increase in meteors here on Earth for a while.

AND! losing Mars will put OUR whole orbit out of whack!!!!

Even if we go very conservative and put this at 20 miles diameter(instead of 30) and reduce the density to 600 kg/m3(instead of 1,000), we still get

= 1.64 x 10^25 Joules
= 3.92 x 10^9 Megatons TNT
= 3,920,000,000 Megatons of TNT

So a very conservative estimate would put it at about 4 billion Megatons of TNT, or 266 million times the energy of the Castle Bravo explosion shown here.
