COFFEE DOOM!
"Thousands of coffee growers in Colombia have gone on strike demanding greater subsidies to protect them against falling international prices and a devalued local currency"

[link to www.bbc.co.uk]

I start every day with a fresh cup of coffee...

lets start the new day off at GLP with Coffee Doom

gaah

Coffee is already high enough... im sure this will not bode well on the already expensive brew... as far as price and quantity availability...

Strike a deal with the farmers so they can get back to work!

grinning

(see my next reply below... it proves im not entirely heartless... concerning the plight of these people)

Ok, Doc. That's it! I quit! Today has just totally sucked and I quit! Take away a person's coffee...REALLY...that's just WRONG!

Seriously, I don't know the details, but I have a feeling they have a good reason to strike.

edit to add...I missed that part...coffee growers, as in owners, not workers. Forget what I said before.

Re: COFFEE DOOM!
I used to work for a co. that built and distributed grain analyzers to test the moisture in everything from corn, beans, wheat to coffee beans and everything in between.

They were sold around the world, i know they have been feeling the pinch of the busting economy and crazy weather. It is a vicious cycle.

Without coffee... I dont wanna be on this planet lol

my cigarette and my coffee... keeps my chin up... and give me hope... I dont ask for much in life... I just want my coffee and my cigarette...

but yeah by the sounds the government is screwing them and giving them low wages

"president says his government already pays growers subsidies of 60,000 pesos (£21; $33) for every 125 kilos of coffee and has said he will consider extending the benefit created last July."
[link to www.bbc.co.uk]

It takes a lot of work to get 125 kilos of coffee... a tree only produces about 7 pounds of beans a year...

125 kilos is 275 pounds...

so it takes about 39 trees to get 33 bucks!

"with more than half a million families reliant on the crop for their livelihoods. But last year's crop was its lowest for decades."
[link to www.bbc.co.uk]

so they not doing so well financially...

I'm hurting for them... their livelihoods are at stake... and you know even with a good crop they arent making very much... i hope they reach a deal that helps them...

but i want my coffee dammit!

had a cup of decaf at applebees tonight

it was pretty good

that's the only time i like coffee, just a small cup after a nice dinner. it's like a dessert, i only drink it a few times each year. i could never drink it every day the way so many people do.

its so good with dessert isnt it?

its not for everyone though.

I drink enough coffee in a year to keep 10 families in Columbia employed lol

Mmmm coffee.

Coffee beans here cost about $0.75 a kilo from the farmers. Massive markup by the middlemen.

I did a little research about storing coffee for my preps. Aside from vacuum packed which should last for at least two years, you can also buy the coffee beans in their green state and they'll still be good in ten years if vacuum packed. Roast, grind, and brew....mmmmm.....

yeah green is the way to go. cheaper and you can get the roast you want with an oven very easy... make your home smell good too :)

But i'll be honest...
I got a bag of roasted whole beans that hasnt been specially prepped...
and its 2 years old... just sitting on a shelf.
every 6 months i grind the beans and make a pot from it...

so far its good, and there isnt any flaws to the taste.

so if you vacuum sealed yours... damn they gonna be good for a long long time!

Oh... i did read that freshly roasted beans emit gas... that can pop vacuum sealed bags... thats why whole bean coffee bags in the store has the lil holes in em...
the gas is emitted up to 2 weeks? or maybe its a week? cant remember

in any measure keep that in mind if you roast em and then seal them. but green coffee beans dont emit the gas.

cheers

That's good information about your two year old roast still being drinkable. Very helpful, thanks for sharing that!
