Comet/Fireball? Victoria, Australia

I live in country Victoria, Australia. Was just out the front having a coffee and a cigarette as you do when I glanced up in the sky. Was looking at the only bright star in the sky when I closed my eyes for a second, looked down, then back up again and the brightest flash I have ever seen streaked across the sky. The time was 8:20pm AEST and is just on dusk here and although getting dark, the sky was still blue. I have seen many a shooting star before but this one takes the cake. In my mind it was no shooting star as it was simply far too close and bright. It was in very low atmosphere compared to shooting stars. Low enough for me to see a distinct large white "ball" slightly ahead of it's very long trail. It was pure white and if it had of been total darkess would have lit up the sky brighter than the moon. Lasted approx 4 seconds then vanished. It was in the Northern sky from where I am

Was just one of those freak moments, didn't have a camera on me, and if I did I wouldn't have had the time to film it.
