Per the Blaze; Why does Congressman Allen West support the National Defense Authorization Act?


Glenn wanted to find out why someone he respects as highly as Congressman Allen West would support the National Defense Authorization Act. This bill has created much fear and concern as the bill has been interpreted to mean that the U.S. Government could detain citizens – even those on U.S. soil and not charged with a crime – indefinitely. That doesn’t sound good – is it true? Why does Congressman West support the bill?

“W’ve got to understand that the 21st century battlefield is completely different from any battlefield that we’ve contended with, ever. And when I think about some of the things that have been happening in our country whereby just last week we have an administration that says that the shooting that Major Nidal Hasan did which is without a doubt an Islamist jihadist attack is workplace violence. I think we’ve got to get serious about the fact that we do have home grown terrorism and home grown jihadism that’s happening here in the United States of America, we can refine the language in the bill in Senate 1687 but if we continue to see Americans such as al‑Awlaki and Samir Khan that are going to start vomiting sedition and taking up arms against our country, we’re going to have to be tougher with that,” West told Glenn.

“I think that right now when you have such a porous border like we have in the United States and we know that Hezbollah and al‑Shabaab are coming into this country, they are being aided and abetted by some Americans citizens and we need to have some real tight rules and laws to make sure that the American people are protected against this. Or else you’re going to see more instances of these quote unquote lone wolves or whatever they want to call it like the New York Times Square Bomber who clearly said, you know, America is my enemy and, you know, he wished that the bomb had gone off,” he added.

West said that people need to realize that elections have consequences and that people need to put people in office who know how to exercise judgement so they don’t use legislation like this to go after just anyone.

Glenn had some disagreements with West, saying that a U.S. citizen suspected of terrorism deserves to have a trial by jury. He did admit “you left the United States, you’re actively engaged on the other side, our troops come in, you’re on the other side, we shoot you or try you there. I have no problem with that.”

“I think that we have to come to an understanding that we are in a war against radical Islamic totalitarianism, we need to have committed and convicted leadership that will explain that and talk about what it is to the American people and then you draw that line,” West explained.

Glenn asked West to pray throughout the process of passing this legislation.
