OBAMA: The Sequester Is A 'Pretty Bad Name,' But Its Effects Are Going To Be Even Worse

President Barack Obama gave a stark warning to a shipyard crowd in Newport News, Va., telling them that the coming cuts known as the sequester are a "dumb way to do things."

"This work, along with hundreds of thousands of jobs, are currently in jeopardy because of politics in Washington," Obama said.

The cuts, which will total $1.2 trillion over a 10-year period, are set to begin kicking in on Friday. Obama's speech in Newport News comes in an area that will be disproportionately affected by the defense cuts of the sequester.

Obama called the sequester a "pretty bad name" for the amount of harm they could inflict, warning that their effects could be "even worse" than the name.

"I'm not interested in spin. I'm not interested in playing a blame game," Obama said. "At this point, all I'm interested in is solving problems."

Obama told the crowd that the effects of the sequester won't be felt overnight, but they will become more real the longer they are allowed to stay in place. Obama warned the crowd that 90,000 workers might have to be furloughed if the sequester goes into effect, and he said it could cost more than 10,000 jobs in Virginia alone.

Re: THE SEQUESTER THREAD!!! NO DEAL!!! US Navy Announces Brutal And 'Deeply Regrettable' Cuts!!!
Sequestration Will Wreak Chaos On U.S. Federal Prisons Sequestration will hit each and every aspect of the U.S. government, but for the Bureau of Prisons, the impact could be horrifying.

According to the Attorney General's office, the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) will have to handle a rising number of inmates with a major budget reduction, a cut of $338 million.

And while other agencies can find ways to do more with less — for example, by reducing procurement, enacting hiring freezes or cutting services — BOP has to maintain constant security at federal prisons around the country with even less money. The solutions will not be pretty.

In an email to Business Insider, a spokesperson from the Department of Justice said that they are "acutely concerned about staff and inmate safety should sequestration occur."

The Department indicated that it may at times maintain a minimum level of staff for security purposes, and that lock-downs may be required.

The Bureau oversees 188 facilities and contracts 16 facilities out to private prison companies. Currently, there is a grand total of 217,249 inmates in the federal prison system, a number BOP expects to rise to 229,300 by the end of 2013. In 2012, the BOP had a budget of $6.6 billion, with 41,310 employees. Correctional officers make up around half of the staff, with 19,756 employees in 2012.

According to DOJ, the sequester budget cuts will result in 5 percent reduction in the Bureau's workforce, which will be achieved by freezing future hiring and furloughing 36,700 staff for an average of 12 days. This means that almost every employee will have to go home without pay for some time, leaving BOP to function at unnecessarily low security levels.

Attorney General Eric Holder indicated that this reduction in force would endanger the lives of staff and inmates.

According to the Attorney General, the BOP will have to implement full or partial lock downs across the board. In a letter to Senate Appropriations Chair Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), Holder said "This would leave inmates idle, increasing the likelihood of inmate misconduct, violence, and other risks to correctional workers and inmates."

Complicating all of this is the fact that the federal prison system is already severely overcapacity.

The "chaos" is planned and the alleged "cuts" are laughable. What they are "cutting" is still an increase over the previous year and ammounts to skipping the extra cheese on one out of ten pizzas. What they are acting like is not getting to eat at all.
"God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, & always, well informed... If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty... Let them take arms... What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. " - Thomas Jefferson in 1787

Re: THE SEQUESTER THREAD!!! NO DEAL!!! US Navy Announces Brutal And 'Deeply Regrettable' Cuts!!!
In a perfect bout of irony, the word sequester has multiple meanings:

Verb
Isolate or hide away (someone or something): "the artist sequestered himself in his studio for two years".

Noun
A general cut in government spending.

The Govt could just as easily started calling these measures Austerity, but then again, that's a dirty word right now as such measures in Italy, Spain, Greece, etc. have resulted in large scale protests.

Its ridiculous the fear they are spreading. If they have to cut 85 billion dollars from a multi-trillion dollar budget, why are they cutting people's jobs and services? I guarantee they could find 2% of their budget in overpriced hammers, and failed solar projects without having to hurt anyone with a job. It's all spin to make sure it's bad.
