I just fired two employees...Ask me a question

Amazes me with this economy people don't care if they keep their jobs or not.

I am firing two tomorrow, both are good paying solid jobs but they both spend the days on facebook and you tube wasting time and not interacting with customers.
This new generation has no drive, it is sad to witness. I feel bad for you, it is never easy.

Yep, these are two good paying jobs with full benefits. I don't get people these days.

What lead to your decision to terminate?

The first had been with the company for 5 years. Openly admitted to giving his friends "breaks" breaks financially when they came in. Then proceeded to break down and bawl that he had children to feed..etc....

The other was the $25 an hour guy. Only been there about 30 claiming he was desperate for the job. He was damn good at it too. Yet, he goes missing for an hour. I walk in his office and he is sound asleep snoring across his desk.

What gives with these people?

Read the offenses, since the first one could be embezzlement kudos, but the second, asleep, did you write him up a few times first, warnings, or just fire him on the spot?

Fired on the spot. Apparently before I went looking for him, two of his subordinates had already walked in his office 30 min prior and witnessed the same thing. Aside from myself, I have 3 other witnesses.

Sorry, but I have to disagree. No bitch here. When hired you are asked to do your job and do it with integrity. Very simple. If you're paid by the hour you don't sleep on your desk.
If you handle money, you don't give breaks with money that's not yours.
Pretty damn simple, basic integrity.
It's black and white...when you start to entertain the color gray...you harm your company and the others that are doing what they are paid to do.

i just went to a job interview and they requested all sorts of shit that wasn't listed in the ad.

note to employers: stop being douchebags and list EVERYTHING you want the employee to do.

Firings justified? Were they given warnings of the behavior detrimental, or did they fuck up BIG?

That all depends on the employer. My company (3 of them) has a rule on listing ads and interviews, the ugly side is presented first. So the applicant knows exactly what we do and expect.
We also cater to entry level positions. We will train. The business I'm in is very specialized and the the skills we teach, become very valuable and people will pay for them.

I understand your frustration, but I must ask (as a supervisor), was this a pattern or a single event. If it was a single event, then perhaps he was asleep due to a serious family problem or an illness. Something that might have been resolved over a discussion and firm warning. You don't mention that taking place. If others witnessed the sleeping throughout the day, then I would assume that those same people would have witnessed similar behavior in the past and come to you about it. Did they? If not, then perhaps it was a single unfortunate event.

Requiring others to be sub-human in the face of personal failing isn't good leadership, nor is it a good for businesses productivity. I'm sure you know this, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume this was a pattern of misbehavior.
