Screw Wausau and keep moving north. We are lucky here, because there is still enough woods here to just walk off. The measure is designed to ease the regulatory path for Gogebic Taconite's plans for a huge iron mine in the Penokee Hills just south of Lake Superior. [link to www.channel3000.com] --- The bill will now go to the state Assembly. Republicans who control that chamber have scheduled a vote for next week. Passage is all but certain. From there the legislation will go to GOP Gov. Scott Walker for his signature. Republicans have been working for nearly two years to help Gogebic Taconite dig an open-pit mine in the Penokee Hills just south of Lake Superior. Their bill would make sweeping changes to the state's mining rules to clear the company's regulatory path. Republicans insist the measure would help the company create hundreds of jobs at the mine and pave the way for thousands more around the state. Walker, eager to deliver on job creation promises, wants the bill on his desk. ... "What you have in front of you tonight is a 21st-century mining bill," said Sen. Tom Tiffany, R-Hazelhurst, the bill's chief Senate sponsor. "Now we have the possibility of a rebirth of an industry here in the state of Wisconsin." Wisconsin Senate passes mining bill after debate [link to www.sfgate.com] Yeah, for five fucking years you short-sighted imbecile. Open-pit iron mining. How stupid are we? :( We all breathe the same air. .-.. --- ...- . / .- .-.. .-.. |

The drillers are supposed to keep their mouths shut, but a guy I know was telling me. He had done enough test bores to recognize certain ore by appearance and density. I forget exactly where, but mid north - probably not far from Rhinelander. |

Quoting: wisc_natureboy This pisses me off. The Penokee-Gogebic Range is one of the last truly pristine areas left here. What is so disturbing is so much of our state's legislative environmental legacy has just been completely gutted. Wisconsin was more-or-less clear cut twice. We 'learned' from our mistakes and started managing our land more respectfully. "The genesis of Earth Day is credited to Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin." [link to en.wikipedia.org] Under Nelson and subsequent Governors more sane regulations were enacted. Our lakes and rivers slowly came back to life. Now, all that has been changed. "“these waterways—including the Bad, Potato and Tyler Forks rivers—are designated as Exceptional or Outstanding Resource waters, meaning they are among the highest quality rivers in Wisconsin, having good water quality … and supporting valuable fisheries and wildlife habitat.”" [link to www.uwsp.edu] What is difficult to understand is why so much environmental degradation is necessary for so little iron. 1000+/- jobs for 5 years. What happened to our 'new economy', why are we reverting? Yes, we need jobs... Ohhh, I get it. 10,000+ jobs 5 years out to clean up the mess. And don't forget the lawsuits. (lawyers getting rich) This legislation is considered a violation of Federal Treaty. "In 1830, Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act, which allowed for the relocation of Native Americans to lands west of the Mississippi. According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, “… it was sometimes applied unilaterally and enforced at gunpoint, in flagrant violation of previous treaties, to evict Indians from valuable lands in the East.” Some of the 10,000,000 bison that were nearly brought to extinction in the late 1870s. Some of the 10,000,000 bison that were nearly brought to extinction in the late 1870s. The Treaties of 1837 and 1842 guaranteed the Ojibwe—Wiggins’ ancestors—the right to stay in the Lake Superior basin in exchange for ceding the US government 23 million acres. The Ojibwe are set to lose pristine land with this operation just upstream of them. Their rice paddies will die and the fishery will be decimated. "...proof is presented that iron ore mining in Minnesota has killed off wild rice in the St. Louis River for 100 miles and that an iron ore mine in the Penokee Hills will devastate the wild rice in the Kakagon Sloughs. For the fourth time, the committee expects Wiggins to plead for the sacred water and sustainable food production that his people are dependent on." ... "Because we’re directly downstream and set to endure the impacts of this project, we view it as an imminent threat. This human threat really manifests itself in a form of genocide. Genocide." [link to wcmcoop.com] Lawsuits and cleanup likely footed by us taxpayers. Just give em more gov't welfare and some casinos and life will be grand. Not that Indians are in favor stewardship of land and game anymore all they want is federal reserve notes and lots of them. It's not like they actively do anything to protect or reintroduce anything. From living in the north country seeing first hand waste that they produce from over fishing and over hunting areas and the lack of any efforts to curb such waste of animals it is left up to the sportsman and DNR to restock and managed lakes rivers and forests and then the have the guts to slap a limit on what we can take from ceded area lakes. The redman is no longer mother earth. It's wall street and uncle Sams handouts. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...” ― Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You'll Go! |

A conservationist and best friend of Gaylord Nelson and many other of Wisconsin's former players. Is rolling around in his grave right now. I have vacationed West of Mellen in the chequamegon national forest for 30+ yrs. On the 1000 acres that Martin's family bought in the 1930's after the loggers had gutted it and left it for dead. His land is now a wildlife refuge and is the most amazing fishery. Pristine actually. If this mine happens there will be hell to pay! |

After a state does something like this, its not a "done deal" until the federal regulatory agencies, such as the EPA let it happen. If a good number of state residents and/or organizations put up a big enough fight, they'll get federal attention. |

The bill is on the Governors desk. --- MADISON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Assembly has approved a polarizing mining bill backed by Republicans, completing a two-year push to help a company dig a giant iron mine near Lake Superior. The Assembly passed the measure on a 58-39 vote Thursday. Republican Gov. Scott Walker has promised to sign it into law. Gogebic Taconite has refused to move forward with its plans for an open-pit mine in the Penokee Hills until legislators ease the regulatory path. The bill dramatically reworks Wisconsin's mining rules. It puts a deadline on a final permit decision and declares any wetland damage is presumed necessary.
