Empty Shelves in Walmart?
Just reading a story on zerohedge about walmart having issues resupplying. I've noticed the same thing in other stores here in Canada, anyone notice anything similar?

here I've noticed the local Toys'R'US and Winners both with empty shelves. Also Walmart seems to have lots of useless crap but runs low on things that are more useful and on sale.

Ontario here....

Re: Empty Shelves in Walmart?
I just noticed that there weren't many people there either yesterday. I've never seen the place that empty until now. It was weird, I even bumped into a family friend I hadn't seen in over a year, she was complaining she had to shop for a birthday party calling them "Amerikansi". I was there because they only carry a coffee I like and the one I like wasn't there either.

I have noticed a reduction in the number of items. In the store. Walmart in Amarillo Texas has not restocked an item for months. Was in the store yesterday looks like a store having trouble?

Maybe the suppliers cannot afford to sell to Walmart.

another note, I've been trying to buy a gamepad for PC since January, there was one there before Christmas, but every time I go it hasn't been restocked. It seems that the electronic department is half empty also.

I have not noticed it with Wal-mart but other grocery stores stopped carrying more than a couple of days worth of inventory a couple of years ago. They call it "just in time" delivery, meaning if they sell it today, they can restock it within a day or two.

The last thing any store wants is any bare space. I work in merchandising and whenever I have gone into a store to reset a planograms we never empty the whole shelf to refill. We just do a small bay at a time so customers don't get spooked.

Not with Wal-Mart, but noticed grocery store chains here abandoning brand name products in lieu of generic store brands and MUCH less of a selection in most departments.

"Just in time" replenishment sometimes has problems if the on hands are off and they are often off- no system is perfect but this is an cost effective way to replenish. When the item reaches a certain level it kicks in replenishment and it takes 2 days to get there from the DC- if there is phantom inventory then it might not happen until someone notices (usually a 3rd party working for the supplier) and get the on hands adjusted.

Re: Empty Shelves in Walmart?
What your are seeing is because of a number of factors. Walmart used to purchase lots of items in bulk having a glut of inventory in their backroom. Now they trying to keep things to a minimum which is more cost effective and reduces markdowns. Earlier this year a memo was leaked to the press that the Vice President of WM said that sales were dismal. This caused a knee jerk reaction to the stock. Well, sales were poor for January because people had to wait til the 30th before the IRS would cash their tax refunds.
So you have a double whammy, Wal-mart's solution was to cut associate's hours and staffing. Meanwhile, after Jan. 30th the average joe was spending their refund money causing the shelves to be empty, and most stores would pull what little stockers/sales clerks they would have to cashier on the "front end". So yeah, February sucked to work at or shop at Wal-mart. March is supposed to be better, we shall see.

Re: Empty Shelves in Walmart?
Issue would be with the importation side as 99.999% of all Walmart items come from China.

When China stops all imports to the US (sanctions) this problem will be not just Walmart but nation wide in about every product area.

When China stops shipping the US will stop functioning as it does today.

This is one of the primary reasons to have prep supplies.

The USA is dependent on China for our most basic consumer needs and they have the power to cut us off.

Also...anyone who thinks China needs the US to buy their stuff has not been watching the change in global economics and the shift away from the dollar in anticipation of this very event.

With sanctions in place...the US will be worse off than Iraq or N. Korea ever was during the height economic sanctions and empty store shelves will be the norm nation wide.

Re: Empty Shelves in Walmart?
Northern N.E. here - Walmart discontinuing many items in our local store, as is the local chain supermarket, which has also gotten rid of some corporate employees and is reorganizing management in our local store. Manger there told me they are discontinuing MANY items.

Other local supermarket - the one with the low prices - seems to be doing business as usual, though many of the prices have gone up a lot.

I believe Walmart and the local chain supermarket mentioned above are aiming to do more online business - Walmart esp. I believe they think if items are unavailable in the stores, folks will order them online - "If they can't get it anywhere else, what else can they do???" has always been how they condition consumers. People generally won't go without. It is more cost-effective for the corporations his way - fewer employees, less shipping, less work = more money for them.

On a side note, I have noticed that all stores in our area seem to frequently be out of sugar and have also minimized the amount of sugar they carry.

The local dollar store is frequently out of bleach and has minimized the amount the carry.

Those are two everyday standard items that are suddenly not as available as they have always been, yet the prices haven't risen to reflect the change in any way.

I haven't been to a Walmart in a while but I've noticed empty shelves in other stores. I was just in Trader Joes the other day and they were out of stock of a lot of stuff, much more than usual. Their meat and frozen food sections were practically empty and I've never seen it like that.
