The coma is a very thin "atmosphere" surrounding the comet's nucleus and can get very large. It is much less dense then a morning fog. This makes sense, but this comet is not yet so active to create such a big coma in a dirty snow ball comet model anyway. For a little comet to create such coma, it should be very close to the Sun, but it is still between 4-5 UA, the distance where this thing should start to sublimate. It depends on the kind of comet. If it's a comet on its first visit to the solar system it contains a lot of gas with a much deeper freezing point like nitrogen, oxygen or methan. This componets outgas at a much greater distance to the sun as e.g carbondioxyd. It's not uncommon for a first time visitor to have a 50,000 to 100,000 km coma at the distance of Jupiter. For example: In prediscovery photo plates frome 1993 the comet Hale-Bopp showed a coma at a distance of 13 AU. . :ase26122019: Annular Solar Eclipse - December 26, 2019 - Kannur, Kerala, India |

In this text you bring (in the hole story), he was giving some possibilities that could happen *IF* C/2012 S1 is a bigger-than-Mars comet, *IF* it passes *really* closes to Mars, *IF* it passes in a very high velocity and *IF* the gravitational tug occurs due to proximity. See why you can't get little excerpts? I still think you have bad intentions here. Sure, it was a project at Cornell to taught to 3rd graders instead of University (kidding). If one part is addressed we can go on. Also he states that Professor McCanney and Phil Plait has had "crossed swords" a couple times what is a big lie! Professor *never, ever* had debated with Phil Plait, ... Quoting: glauco So Phil Plait never crossed swords with McCanney? Shall I look for the transscription of the debate on C2C? It's quite entertaining and left McCanny with egg on his face. Some readings obout this: [link to www.badastronomy.com] [link to www.badastronomy.com] [link to cosmoquest.org] I stand corrected - I mistook it with another debate Plait had. Nevertheless Plait ripped McCanney a new one. James (Jim) McCanney: Quoting: Hydra "imagine the USA with riots in the city streets and no bat man to save you … it's coming … the things you are going to need are on my sales page." McCanney uses the fear he generates from his theories to sell survival equipment, including water filters, non-GMO Corn seed, and an emergency sun-star clock. [link to www.cosmophobia.org] Man, don't be so fool. You can't take 3 lines of an incomplete phrase to decide if somebody is good or bad. You've seen I can. Yes, you do, and is not correct. Is against any rules of debate. You *MUST* focus on the subject and what the speaker means, *NEVER* isolating little pieces of text. What kind of scientific jornalist are you? The bolded part of McCanneys quote describes exactly the intention of McC. I don't know how the context around this quote could change the meaning of the quote. What do you imagine, that Professor is getting rich selling some books and water filters? Quoting: glauco "Professor" James McCanney? Can you give any references to his professorship? At least I couldn't find any - au contraire. The title "Professor" all around the world but in USA and Canada is any person who teaches. As he was a teacher in some countries in Latin America and his audience is worldwide, so he *IS* a Professor. "In the United States and Canada the title of professor is granted to most scholars with doctorate degrees or equivalent qualifications (typically Ph.D.s) who teach in two- and four-year colleges and universities, and is used in the titles assistant professor and associate professor, which are not considered professor-level positions elsewhere, as well as for full professors." [link to en.wikipedia.org] He [McCanney] claims to hold an M.S. degree. That's not usually enough, and at Cornell (where he claims to have taught) I know for a fact it's not enough. ... No way could anyone with merely a Master's degree be addressed there as "Professor". "... I don't see where this individual [McCanney] has claimed to hold a PhD. One can hold a PhD and not hold a professorship. But in general (and especially at Cornell) one cannot hold a professorship without also holding a PhD. It's simply a requirement for the job." [link to cosmoquest.org] Please provide evidence that McCanney holds a PhD and on what subject. Man, how could a pseudoscientist to have dozens of scientifical papers published by NASA, Cornell and Harvard and participate as a guest on scientific meetings all around the world? Do me a favor, man! Quoting: glauco Reference to his "scientifical papers" published by NASA, Cornell and Harvard and to his "scientific meetings" all around the world. Here: adsabs.harvard.edu. I found more in other repositories, but I missed them. Please link to the specific documents and events - I as well don't give you a link to Google and say "Look it up for yourself". Once we have clarified the professorship of James McCanney and as a consequence his credibility, we can go on with the other topics like the "planet sized nucleus" of C/2012 S1 (ISON), "the mass of this comet which could rival little mars" and change mars orbit or that comets collect matter and become planets or comet Hale Bopp had a companion (though millions of people and astronomers watched it but no one saw this companion). . :ase26122019: Annular Solar Eclipse - December 26, 2019 - Kannur, Kerala, India |

To say it with the words of Forrest Gump: "Comets are like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get." The current development of the light curve shows a peak brightness of -13 mag at 2013 Nov. 28, 18:00 UTC. That is as bright as the full moon - not 15 times as bright. But this peak brightnes the comet will reach only at some hours around perihelion (his closest approach to the sun). The day before and after the perihelion the estimated brightnes is only -3.8 mag, about the brightness of Venus. Unfortunately at this time (Perihelion +/- 1 day) the comet is too close to the sun to be observable without special equipment (simulating a solar eclipse - don't know the englisch word, in german it's "Protoberanzenansatz"). Nevertheless it will be in the Lasco images at that time. A more reliable brightness estimation can be made in July/August (at best) - at the moment the development is lower than expected.
