Won't expats be killed when the economy collapses?
It occurs to me that when the economy collapses and you can't get money out of the bank or food from the supermarket that most expats will be in real trouble. Obviously most places, particularly in Asia, are nowhere near survivable by living off the land, and as foreigners the expats would be among the first to be killed and eaten. Wouldn't the impending economic meltdown be an argument to stay somewhere in the West where you could live off the land and plan on simply enslaving any women you wanted and moderating their lousy personalities by beating the crap out of them when it became practical to do so?

No. The trick about being an expat, and it is true for most of us, is that we are more mobile than most.

Thus it is easier for us to seek safer ground at short notice, and generally we have less baggage to tie us to one particular spot.

Any collapse won't be overnight. You will be able to tell where will be better than other places.

Re: Won't expats be killed when the economy collapses?
The other thing, generally expats have not just strong local knowledge of their home country, but strong local, working knowledge of the countries they've lived in, work in and visit.

This, coupled with the extensive network of on-the-ground contacts in numerous countries (part of being an expat is you tend to mix not just with locals, but other expats who hail from countries from all over) then you have a much greater support network globally to draw on, should you have to move.

Those who have never travelled, lived overseas - some may not even have a passports or know how to get through border crossings without being hassled - are at a distinct disadvantage if their home turf goes to shit.

Expats have greater chances of survival, not less.

hard to say how it will be like, but currency wars and high inflation should be global, so not a wise idea to move abroad unless you have enough money to be sure you can live off what you have for the rest of your life, and i dont by far

it would be too hard / risky for me to move to a country where i dont know anyone and have issues with the language, find an income source and depend on it

i dont know how this will play out but i dont think you'll make it by being mr nice guy, i think you'll have to go into alpha male mode, like you say, and you want allies / friends to help you out

and the 68'er generation will be hated by the young, so they better make sure their economy is in order and have skills that are of use if they want to make it trough this

and i need to spend time learning myself, im going on trips to the forest this summer to learn about plants to eat (ive bought books) among other things, and ive bought a canner, and i'll buy lots of jars, green house, seeds and gardening tools ahead

I live on the edge of jungle (off-grid) but I am also very old. Satellite Internet is my only luxury.
So, before they come for me I'll be gone from old age.
BTW I am the oldest here on GLP, but 100% lucid!

and this might come sooner than you think, the currency war is already on

Re: Won't expats be killed when the economy collapses?
Expats typically live in areas that will be unaffected by what's coming to the US.

Where I'm at, I don't need a monthly income. I may lose a couple pounds in the process, but I won't be living next to a ghetto war zone, police quarantine area, and 1 million desperate starving sheeple.

I'll be fine regardless cause I made all my moves years ago. People in the states will be forced to fight or they will die. It's gonna be just like the hunger games. It'll be great entertainment.

i knew all this was going to happen, so i packed up and left in 2005 to avoid what's going to happen to y'all. i was a little early, but that's ok.

if i had to do it over, i would have gone further south, like Paraguay, but it's too late now.

i certainly could be wiped out as well, but i have all the bases covered.......all of them!

Wherever you decide to live as expat, make sure it's in tropics.
I am convinced that soon we'll be plunged into ICE AGE.
Actually the cooling will start as of 2014 and will continue the following 20 to 30 years for a total temperature drop of more than one degree Celcius (-1C) but it could drop as much as 2 degrees globally. THAT'S DEEP FREEZE!
The interglacial is over!

Maybe not killed but not exactly going to be welcome anymore.

We've just returned to England after almost 10 years of living as expats in southern Spain. We had good local friends but also had 3 children to think about and there just isn't any future for them in a country where youth unemployment is almost 60%.

a good idea is to set up resupply points and safe havens for those of us that fight TPTB. its not gonna be easy, but necessary. those of us with ex- military experience should work out something. i know trust will be a major factor, but so will being able to flip the switch to off the fuckers that stand in our way. doesnt sound nice, but will have to happen at times.they will have their plants and we will have to do the same. good luck and lets get this underway..

no, the first to be killed/eaten will be the rich and their families. probably at the same time as the politicians and the lawyers and the bankers, although most of these will fall into the category of rich or at least seem rich and the mob will not be very discerning anyhow.

Re: Won't expats be killed when the economy collapses?
At least the OP understands human nature.
The outsider is the one that gets the rope with any turmoil first, always, and is the easiest sacrifice for whatever the problem is.

Always.

The foreigner expat is welcomed only because they bring money and the possibility of opportunity to benefit the community and once that's gone, any of their past and future actions will be reanalized into something deserving of punishment and destruction.
Funny how so many here dont understand basic human nature or what the primary purpose of a nation actually is.
If you did, you wouldnt be so fast to let your own nation be taken over by those thaqt already have one, it should be obvious that those that have theirs, but want yours, are never gonna be your friends, and mean you nothing but harm and extermination for their benefit

NO, the wealthy and connected will have a buffer due to their wealth and ability to limit access to them for a time.
They are still family, the outsider is never family and is easy to give up to the mob by those natives in power.

You have no true friends when you leave home to live in a strange land among strangers.
And, you never have enough money to prevent being made the first scapegoat
