The OP's premise, baldly stated, is "How could they have gotten safely through a Van Allen Belt they didn't know was there?" It pre-supposes that any radiation belt is impassible. If that were the case, then the number of them is immaterial. If you can't pass through a radiation belt, then either of the two already known of are sufficient. If you CAN pass through a radiation belt, then adding another one is hardly a show-stopper. |

What happened to us - did we just forget how to do stuff No. congress decided they didn't want to pay for it. - I mean it's obvious that the computers we have now are shit compared to late 60's tech what with how they were able to program, pilot, land, blast off, re-couple and return to earth using total computing power of less than that of the average smartphone. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2836766 So? How many megabytes does it take to get to orbit? All the calculations were done in mainframes on Earth. The computers on the spacecraft did not have to co any calculations of their own. Hell, they even beamed back live coverage of the landing and take-off from the surface of the moon (I kinda feel sorry for the camera man who was left behind and is unknown and unsung in the history of our illustrious space program) Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2836766 They used the same remotely controlled camera on the rover that they filmed the EVAs with. while today we STILL get dropped cellphone calls and there is a patchwork of no cell coverage areas across the U.S. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 2836766 which has NOTHING to do with beaming a low bandwidth signal from the Moon and picking it up with giant receiving dishes. Ditto with the micro meteorite defying anti radiation playtex space suits that could go from 253 F (123 C) in full sunlight to -243 F (153 C) in the shade without so much as any loss of surface plaibility or suit integrity let alone any noticeable discomfort to person wearing the suit. Gee, good thing that the universe follows the laws of thermodynamics that you apparently don't understand and things don't heat up immediately but rather take TIME to do so. There is the immutable assumption that everything works the same there as there in spite of the dramatic difference in environment. The assumption that any radiation would stop the trip is also evident. And calling anyone who disagrees a shill certainly doesn't help you gain a wider knowledge of the subject and the science. In other words, you are to stupid to explain it to and you simple refuse to change that. |

"There are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say, we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns – the ones we don’t know we don’t know." It's very true (although it could be stated more elegantly!) One has to study a subject for a while before one really learns how much there is to learn about it. But there is no easy mechanism for detecting when you need to study. The books are full of professionals who assume because they have expertise in one field, they understand a different one. This is a particular problem in engineering, when you are building things in the real world that, if you didn't know you needed to understand, say, behavior of cryogenic liquids in a mixed-metals valve, you are going to end up with failures, explosions, loss of expensive parts and possible loss of life. About the only rule of thumb I have to offer is; "Always assume things are more complicated than you think." Humans are complex creatures. They don't like to leave things alone. So it doesn't matter what the activity it is, whether it is geology, or collecting post office cancellation stamps, you can be certain that a few hours will NOT suffice to bring you up to a decent grasp of the field. |

Instead they have to resort to copying from him. Which means not only do they not understand how wrong he is, they very possibly don't even understand the (erroneous) argument he is making in the first place! Sad. Makes me think of the Argument Clinic sketch. You hope to be able to actually wrestle with some decent ideas, but the other party comes armed only with "yeah, your mother!"
