Do you know what the "Yankee Doodle" song really means?
The song's origins were in a pre-United States Revolutionary War song originally sung by British military officers to mock the dishevelled, unorganized colonial "Yankees" with whom they served in the French and Indian War. At the time, the most common meaning of the word doodle had the meaning of "simpleton" or "fool".

Most interestingly though, is the part when this yankee sticks a feather in his hat and calls it "Macaroni".

If you ever wondered why he called it "macaroni", it's because during this era a flaming homosexual social club in England, which went by the name "macaroni", and the homosexuals during this era were known as "macaroni".

"In mid-18th century England, a macaroni was a fashionable fellow who dressed and even spoke in an outlandishly affected manner".

(Wikipedia)

In other words, the brits were not only calling us simpletons, they were calling us homos.

This song caught on in the states, and till this day it is a merry "American" sing-along for the kiddies.

Didn't macaroni refer to the "piping" that was worn on some expensive clothing back then?

(Because macaroni pasta is tube shaped.)

Re: Do you know what the "Yankee Doodle" song really means?
To who ever called it "BS", check this out.

"When I first sang this verse from ‘Yankee Doodle’ as a schoolgirl, I thought the hero had decided to name his horse ‘Macaroni’. A precocious child, I knew it was nonsensical for Yankee Doodle to call his hat ‘Macaroni’, as many of my classmates professed he had done. But as I grew older, I was determined the song was simply a frivolous nursery rhyme devoid of any real meaning, and designed to appeal to a child's sense of humor (macaroni being quite a fun, tasty, yet comical food to the grade school set). After a little research, however, I've uncovered the truth behind the Yankee Doodle mystery. Our Revolutionary War hero was, in fact, an aspiring dandy—a member of the elite and haute couture Macaroni Club of the 1770s.

The Macaroni Club consisted of young, wealthy British gentlemen who traveled to France and Italy and adopted the ostentatious and flamboyant fashions popular in those countries during the eighteenth century. The Macaronis, not members of a true club but rather a new generation of continental society, were often ridiculed by the British establishment. The Macaroni moniker was a tongue-in-cheek reference to their import of foreign cuisine as well as fashion. Macaronis wore form-fitting trousers and short waistcoats with ruffles and braiding, and sported superfluities such as tasseled walking sticks, spy glasses, and nosegays. They wore elaborate toupees and wigs topped by tiny tricorn hats that were definitely form over function. These trends may have been en vogue at the Court of Versailles, but they didn't go over well back home with the more staid Brits, who perceived the Macaronis’ style as extreme, effeminate, and silly."

Now, it isn't on the record that this "Macaroni" Club, which existed pre-revolution was openly homosexual, but i think it's safe to say young, wealthy British gentlemen who enjoyed dressing up in flamboyant fashions, and little hats, and debate over fashion may be homos, but they say the same about the "gentlemen" at the Bohemian Grove, and their completely straight "boys club" (Except with fancy hooded robes and occult music and rituals).

The GAY PORN stars who have been known to visit the Grove, would tell you that "gentlemen" clubs are not the place to be for the ladies.

God bless America.

That shows the difference between the Americans and many other nations. The Americans didn't take offense to the song but turned it around and made it a song of rebellion. Americans were proud to be called yankees and "Yankee Doodle" became the colonists most stirring anthem of defiance and liberty.

Contrast that to the Muslims who are so offended by a crude cartoon of some guy with a silly fire cracker in his turban that they go on a rampage and kill innocent people and even blow them selves up to make a sad worthless point.

I'm proud to be an American.

In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

I am from Holland. From Asimov the science fiction I learned about the. Jan Kees Dutch relation of the name. Yankees. My following surprise was. Yankee Doodle: In old Dutch we had the expression: He is a. "Jan Doedel" (yan doodle) what means : he is a fool. It is lightly use, no a strong negative meaning.

Re: Do you know what the "Yankee Doodle" song really means?
Um, it has always been obvious to me that the fellow in the song is silly and the song is a joke.

Yankee... sounds obnoxious*

Doodle.. something silly, an idle drawing

Dandy... too into fashion, spiffy guy

Riding on a Pony... grown men rode horses

Put a feather in his cap and called it macaroni... o.k., he's accessorizing now (until today I didn't know about the macaroni club, but still)

I just took it as a joke. Even as a kid. Yankee Doodle is a not even a cool guy. He is the guy that irons the other guys' uniforms before inspections.

It is not an anthem of pride or an anthem of anything. It is a silly song.

I wasn't really around for the French and Indian War, so I can't keep up with whatever bon mots the British were throwing around at the time. But, I'm not too surprised to learn they made up the song.

*is making fun of the accent of Dutch farmers who were soldiers, thus is region specific.

I will say, the song is kind of fun to sing if you're a little kid.

Are you fking serious?

I guess they could have tried it and the British would have fallen down laughing. Is there a battle in the Revolutionary War we won because the British were too busy rolling on the ground laughing?

And I was not around for the French and Indian War. Were you? So, it is unknown how people really felt about this.

Have you ever heard of people in the U.S. that remained loyal to the British? Yeah, they were a thing. They probably perpetuated the song, don't you think? Then, after a while, it stopped meaning much to a lot of people and just became a joke.
